Vice President Kamala Harris is being “sidelined” and “not being adequately prepared,” multiple individuals told CNN.

In a report published Sunday — based on interviews with nearly three dozen former and current Harris aides, administration officials, Democratic operatives, and outside advisers — CNN outlined a picture of a Vice President struggling to make strides amid a dismal approval rating.

“Harris is struggling with a rocky relationship with some parts of the White House, while long-time supporters feel abandoned and see no coherent public sense of what she’s done or been trying to do as vice president,” write CNN’s Edward-Isaac Dovere and Jasmine Wright.

The report noted that Harris has not helped herself in certain instances — such as when she did not correct a student accusing Israel of genocide and told Guatemalans not to come to migrate to the U.S. — and she has faced added scrutiny as the first woman, and first woman of color, to be Vice President.

“She’s perceived to be in such a weak position that top Democrats in and outside of Washington have begun to speculate privately, asking each other why the White House has allowed her to become so hobbled in the public consciousness, at least as they see it,” the CNN report reads.

While some defended her strategies and accomplishments in the role of Vice President, many sources told CNN that “Harris’ staff has repeatedly failed her and left her exposed, and family members have often had an informal say within her office.”

According to the article, Harris has said “she feels constrained in what she’s able to do politically.” It then noted that Harris publicly advertising her political ambitions could be problematic, “with Biden’s team highly attuned to signs of disloyalty, particularly from the vice president.”

The Harris office work environment has previously come under criticism, with one individual familiar with how the office is run telling POLITICO in June that “it’s not a healthy environment and people often feel mistreated, it’s not a place where people feel supported but a place where people feel treated like s—.”

“Vice President Harris is focused on the work, not the chatter at the water cooler,” a spokesperson for Harris told POLITICO.
