Democratic Senator Tells CNN He’s Worried Biden Will Drag Dems Down with Him: ‘We Could Lose the Whole Thing’

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) said President Joe Biden could cost Democrats the White House and drag down the rest of the party with him.

However, he did not explicitly call for Biden to step aside and make way for another candidate to be nominated at next month’s convention.

Democratic lawmakers have expressed alarm in public and private after Biden’s poor debate performance nearly two weeks ago. The president often stumbled over his words and struggled to keep his train of thought. Subsequent interviews did little to allay those concerns.

On Tuesday, CNN’s Dana Bash reported that Bennet and Sens. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Jon Tester (D-MT) do not believe Biden can defeat former President Donald Trump in November’s election. Brown and Tester are facing tough reelection battles this year.

Kaitlan Collins cited Bash’s report on CNN’s The Source, where she asked Bennet, who briefly ran for president in 2020, about it.

“Is that true?” she inquired.

“Well, it’s true that I said that and I did say that behind closed doors and you guys and others asked whether I said it, and that is what I said,” he replied. “So, I figured I should come here and say it publicly.”

“Why do you think he can’t win in November?” she asked.

“I just think this race is on a trajectory that is very worrisome if you care about the future of this country,” the senator said, citing concerning polling data for Biden.

“Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win this election and maybe win it by a landslide and take with him the Senate and the House,” he continued. “So, for me, this isn’t a question about polling. It’s not a question about politics. It’s a moral question about the future of our country. And I think it’s critically important for us to come to grips with what we face if together, we put this country on the path of electing Donald Trump again.”

“So, you’re worried that your party is not just gonna lose the White House if Joe Biden is at the top of the ticket, but that you’re also going to lose both chambers of Congress?” Collins asked.

“I think that we could lose the whole thing,” Bennet answered.

Democrats control the Senate by two seats and hold just six fewer seats than the Republicans in the House.
