Former House Republican Calls Gaetz and Allies ‘Full Of It’ – Adds, ‘You Wouldn’t Want Them Near Your Children’
Former Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-VA) had some pointed words for Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and the seven other Republicans who voted to remove Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speakership on Tuesday.
The eight House Republicans joined 208 Democrats voting for McCarthy’s ouster. It is the first time in U.S. history the speaker has been removed. Gaetz expressed frustration with the ex-speaker in recent weeks, claiming he breached the terms of an agreement they reached back in January when Gaetz withdrew his opposition to McCarthy’s speakership bid in exchange for concessions. Matters came to a head over the weekend when McCarthy shepherded a short-term spending bill through the House to avert a government shutdown. More Democrats voted for the measure than Republicans.
That irked Gaetz, who filed a motion to vacate the chair, triggering a vote of the House on whether to remove McCarthy.
The House adjourned until next week and at this point, it is unclear who will replace McCarthy.
Appearing on Tuesday’s CNN Primetime, Comstock sympathized with “moderates” in the House GOP conference.
“It’s very frustrating for them because they’re the people governing,” she said. “A lot of the people that you saw today – the Bob Goods, the Matt Gaetzes – these are people who don’t pass bills. These are people who don’t wanna vote for budgets. They don’t want the government open. These are the people who support Donald Trump, the $8 trillion budget-buster guy So, for all their whining about the budget, they’re the ones who want Donald Trump back in there, who does not wanna cut any budget.”
Comstock then appeared to allude to a now-closed Department of Justice probe into whether Gaetz had sexual relations with a minor. That investigation has since been closed and he will not be charged.
“So, they’re full of it,” Comstock continued. “And they’re all jokers who don’t know how to work with anybody. And you wouldn’t want them– you don’t want them in Congress. You wouldn’t want them near your children.”
She concluded, “They need adult supervision and they don’t know how to run anything.”
