Liz Cheney Blasts ‘Sad’ and ‘Pathetic’ Kevin McCarthy for Saying He’d Serve in Another Trump Administration

Former Rep. Liz Cheney continued her broadsides against Rep. Kevin McCarthy by slamming the former speaker over comments he made in an interview that aired on Sunday.

Cheney joined Monday’s Inside on MSNBC, where host Jen Psaki aired a clip of McCarthy speaking with Robert Costa on CBS Sunday Morning, where the reporter asked about former President Donald Trump’s 2024 bid:

COSTA: Can he count on your support?

MCCARTHY: Yes.

COSTA: That’s an endorsement.

MCCARTHY: I will support the president. I will support President Trump.

COSTA: Would you be willing to serve in a Trump cabinet?

MCCARTHY: In the right position. Look, if I’m the best person for the job, yes.

“Watching that, I was thinking, why?” Psaki reacted. “You’re leaving Congress. So why?”

“I can’t explain it,” Cheney said. “It’s pathetic. There’s sort of an element of– it doesn’t really matter what Donald Trump has done to the country, what Donald Trump has done to the Congress, Donald Trump has done to Kevin McCarthy–”

“To him!” Psaki interjected.

“Yeah, it’s just kind of, you know, going back for more,” Cheney said. “And I think it’s– I think it’s sad, but I also think history’s going to show that Kevin’s unwillingness to do the right thing and you know, sort of each time that decision came, did real damage.”

A week after the Capitol riot, McCarthy delivered a floor speech in which he blamed Trump for the chaos.

“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters,” McCarthy said. However, the former speaker would later claim, “Everybody in the country bears responsibility for the attack.”
