Trump Says He’s ‘Very Disappointed’ With Russian Attacks on Ukraine Amid Negotiations
President Donald Trump expressed grave disappointment with the Putin-led Russian attacks on Ukraine during ceasefire negotiations, which led to civilian deaths.
Trump’s comments came as he took questions following the swearing in of Jeanine Pirro as US Attorney for Washington, DC, and arrived at a crucial time for ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine following President Vladimir Putin’s direction of a military invasion into the former Soviet Republic roughly three years ago.
“Do you believe the Russians are being disrespectful when they say that your criticisms of Putin are simply an emotional response, and do you still believe that Putin actually wants to end the war?” Trump was asked by a member of the White House Press Corps in attendance.
“I can’t tell you that, but I’ll let you know in about two weeks, within two weeks,” Trump replied. “We’re going to find out very soon. We’re gonna find out whether or not he’s tapping us along or not. And if he is, we’ll respond a little bit differently.”
“But it’ll take about a week and a half, two weeks. We have Mr. [Steve] Witkoff is here is doing a phenomenal job, dealing with them very strongly right now,” he continued. “They seem to want to do something, but until the document is signed, I can’t tell you. Nobody can.”
“I can say this, I could say this that I’m very disappointed at what happened a couple of nights ago, where people were killed in the middle of what you would call a negotiation,” Trump added. “I’m disappointed by that. Very, very disappointed.”
Trump was referencing a drone and missile attack on Ukraine that The Wall Street Journal reported as Russia “defying” Trump, which led to multiple casualties.
Trump’s rhetoric towards Putin and Russia has ratcheted up lately, but thus far, it’s only been talk. No military or economic sanctions have been imposed yet.
