‘What the Hell Are You Doing Running?’ Chris Christie Questions Ramaswamy’s Ample Praise Of Trump on Fox News
Republican presidential candidate and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie expressed bewilderment at the candidacy of Vivek Ramaswamy, who has declined to criticize Donald Trump, even though the former president is the frontrunner.
Trump maintains a sizable if not insurmountable lead over the GOP field, and he has so far boycotted the debates. The candidates have criticized Trump to varying degrees, with the notable exception of Ramaswamy, who said Trump is the greatest president of this century, but that it is time for a new generation of leadership.
Christie appeared on Wednesday’s Special Report on Fox News. Originally, he was supposed to have a conversation with Ramaswamy on the broadcast, but the Republican National Committee threw a hissy fit and threatened to ban both candidates from future debates.
“What do you say to the voters out there who look at your campaign and say, really it is about vengeance on the former president, specifically?” host Bret Baier asked, alluding to the fact Christie was once in Trump’s inner circle and is now persona non grata. “How do you address that?”
“First, it’s about protection of the Constitution and protection of our democracy and our way of life,” Christie responded. “And you know, the things that Donald Trump has been charged with, criminally, and the things that he’s done that aren’t even part of the criminal charges are absolutely important issues to discuss if for no other reason than because he is the frontrunner in this race, Bret.”
Christie then responded to a clip Baier played in which Ramaswamy accused the former governor of running a grievance campaign against Trump.
“I look at what Vivek does here – he’s practically his wingman,” Christie said of Ramaswamy and Trump. “He says he’s the greatest president of the 21st century. Well, if he is, what the hell are you doing running? You should just drop out and endorse Donald Trump for reelection, which I think is essentially what he’s doing. I think he’s auditioning for a cabinet position if Donald Trump were to ever become president again.”
Christie went on to say the former president offered him several positions in his administration, all of which he turned down.
