Fox Sports Host and Restaurateur Colin Cowherd Blasts Media for Overhyping Eatery Closures: They Act ‘Like a Meteor Hit’ the Industry!

As restaurants began to shutter during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic last year, many forecasted the industry to be ravaged long-term.

So when The National Restaurant Association announced only 14% of food establishments were forced to close permanently during the pandemic, Fox Sports Radio host Colin Cowherd hoped the media would report it as a positive story.

“The media sees itself as so above the public that they never give the public credit,” Cowherd complained to his co-host Joy Taylor. “The media has gotten increasingly overdramatic on everything. Everything’s end of the world.”

Despite making a career as a sports radio and TV host, Cowherd said he doesn’t consider himself to be part of the media. “I don’t like the media mostly, don’t trust em,” he added.

“The restaurant industry has overwhelmingly survived an awful pandemic and the media made it sound like a meteor had crashed on the culinary industry,” Cowherd said to support his fearmongering claim.

In all, 14% of restaurants were forced to close in 2020, but the Fox Sports host and culinary owner himself said 60% of restaurants fail in their first year without the influence of a global pandemic, and 80% are unable to survive five years.

According to Cowherd, the less than expected number of closures “proved the resilience of American workers and the creativity of restaurant workers.” Those workers altered seating and menus to attract a younger demographic, while emphasizing takeout for those who weren’t comfortable dining out.

“As members of the media, we should bring down the panic, not rise anxiety,” Cowherd said wishfully. “We should add context to stories so we don’t all freak out.”
