Biden Backer Michael Douglas Tells The View He’s ‘Deeply Concerned’ Post-Debate, Says Dems Have ‘Big Bench’ of Possible Replacements

Michael Douglas told The View on Wednesday that Democrats have a “big bench” of “heavy hitters” who could step in for President Joe Biden should he drop his reelection bid.

Douglas, who held a fundraiser for Biden in April, expressed sympathy for the president, praising his decades in office, but he also said he’s “concerned” following his performance at last month’s CNN debate with Donald Trump. Subsequent interviews by Biden have only led for further calls for him to step down.

One of the voices on the left to add themselves to the chorus of those voices on Wednesday is George Clooney, also a big supporter and activist for Democrats. Clooney published an op-ed on Wednesday calling for Biden to be replaced for November’s election, echoing a point made by numerous other Democrats, including strategist James Carville and filmmaker Michael Moore.

“I think it’s a valid point,” Douglas said in response to Clooney’s declaration. “I’m deeply, deeply concerned. I mean, especially, it’s difficult because the Democrats have a big bench. They’ve got a lot of heavy hitters.”

Douglas, who was promoting the documentary America’s Burning, criticized Biden’s team flubbing the debate, arguing it was a “relatively simple” event to win.

“First of all, they should have told the president to stand up, put a little makeup on him for the debate, which should help him, and where to look —”

“And call the other guy a convicted felon,” Hostin said, jumping in.

“And just don’t deal with all your facts, just deal with his lies,” Douglas said in agreement.

Whoopi Goldberg, who said after the debate she’d support Biden even if he “pooped” his pants, pushed back on this, saying she “feels bad” for the president and the position he’s in.

“When he does that, everybody says you’re not doing it — you know, you can’t win in this gig,” she said. “I really feel bad for him.”
