Chris Wallace: If Pelosi Caves On Wall Funding ‘She Would Probably Be Thrown Out’ as Speaker
In advance of the White House meeting Friday afternoon between President Donald Trump and Democratic lawmakers, Fox News’ Chris Wallace believes neither side has any incentive to make a deal over funding for a border wall on the southern border and end the partial government shutdown.
According to Wallace, because Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was just voted into her new leadership position, if she were to include border wall funding to reopen the government, she would be thrown out by the Democrats.
“They are under no political pressure to make a deal. If Nancy Pelosi were to go into that meeting and come out and say, ‘I’ve agreed to give the president funding for the wall,’ she would probably be thrown out as speaker,” Wallace said .”Her Democratic caucus, this is an article of faith now for the vast majority of them.”
Wallace said the same damaging outcome would be the same for Trump if he reopened the government without funds for a border wall.
“If President Trump were to come out of the meeting and say, ‘You what, I’ve agreed we’re going to do funding for the government and no wall,’ you’ve heard [Sen.] Lindsay Graham (R-SC), I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration to say that would be the end of his presidency. It would certainly be extremely damaging to a lot of his base. He campaigned on this, it’s one of the reasons a lot of people voted for him,” Wallace said.
“So I don’t see any possibility of a compromise at any time soon until one side begins to feel some political pressure, which I don’t think either side feels right now,” he added.
