CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Jeff Sessions is Out ‘Five Minutes After Polls Close’ in Midterms
On CNN on Tuesday, Jake Tapper covered some of the allegations of crazy behavior and explosive statements reported in Bob Woodward‘s new book, and the implications for the people allegedly quoted. CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin had a prediction for one of President Donald Trump‘s favorite targets of ire, Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
CNN White House correspondent Kaitlin Collins posed the question of how Trump can continue to work with people who may have said these things about him, like James Mattis or John Kelly, or how he can work with people who he has publicly trashed himself, like Jeff Sessions.
“How does he go to a meeting or intelligence briefing or a meeting on Syria with the Defense Secretary James Mattis,” she asked, “seeing that he’s said these things about the president that James Mattis has not denied, we should note, since the excerpt this book came out several hours ago?”
“How does the president work with him? How does he work with John Kelly who said this is ‘crazytown’ and you can’t tell the president everything. How does he work with Jeff Sessions who he called ‘mentally retarded’, according to what Bob Woodward said in this book?” Collins continued. “That raises the question what is the makeup of the president’s cabinet going to look like in the next few weeks, does he make changes or do any of them–?”
Toobin responded regarding Sessions. “Five minutes after the polls close on election day, Jeff Sessions is out the door, I don’t think there’s any doubt,” he said. “He’s made that quite clear.”
He did note that with regard to the others, Trump does have a pattern of getting angry and then letting people back into his circle, saying that is possible in the case of John Kelly.
