CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin: Judge’s Ruling is ‘Doom for Paul Manafort’

On Wednesday, CNN’s Jeffrey Toobin reacted to the news that Paul Manafort lied to investigators after he agreed to a plea deal with Robert Mueller‘s office by saying it amounts to “doom” for the former Trump campaign chair.

According to the filing, “The Office of Special Counsel is no longer bound by its obligations under the plea agreement, including its promise to support a reduction of the offense level in the calculation of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines for acceptance of responsibility.”

“Well, it’s doom for Paul Manafort,” he said. “Yes, it’s better for him that it was only three out of five. But remember, [Judge] Amy Jackson also revoked Manafort’s bail because of his behavior while he was out on bail.”

He added: “This is a judge who has had it with Paul Manafort. Yes, it could have been worse. Going into sentencing as a 70-year-old man with this kind of finding is just disastrous.”

Then, a bit later in the Situation Room panel discussion, Toobin stressed that Manafort’s physical health seems to have eroded since going into prison — shockingly so.

“I saw him in court the other day,” Toobin said. “He is shockingly — he has shockingly declined. He walks with a cane. He appears disoriented. He is in terrible shape.”

Toobin then noted that this case isn’t even the only one he faces.

“It is just a disastrous situation for Manafort,” he repeated.  “No one needs a pardon more than Paul Manafort.”
