Cohen Lawyer Lanny Davis on Latest Trump-Cohen Bombshell: ‘It Was Not From Us’

On Thursday evening, CNN broke an exclusive report that Michael Cohen claimed President Donald Trump personally approved a June 2016 Trump Tower meeting with Russians who were said to have had damning information on his then-challenger, Hillary Clinton. That is significant in part because Trump has contended he knew nothing about the meeting before it took place.

However, an MSNBC report is now shedding doubt if Cohen’s claims came from the president’s former fixer himself.

Lanny Davis, Cohen’s attorney, told the network that while he had no comment on the matter, it wasn’t his team that put out the story and implied it may have been “Trump people.”

“I have to wonder why the Trump people would put that out,” he said, host Rachel Maddow reported shortly after CNN’s scoop hit the air. “It was not from us.”

That made for a confusing moment on CNN, when contributor John Dean began wondering during a live interview whether host Jim Sciutto was aware of the conflicting report.

“On the way over, MSNBC is reporting that Lanny Davis said they did not release this, that they found it very interesting that the Trump camp had released it, which adds another dimension to the story,” he said, responding to a question from host Don Lemon on the latest in the Cohen saga. “I don’t know if Jim has heard that or not.”

“I think they discussed that,” Lemon said, referring to an interview that has just wrapped up with the network’s Chris Cuomo and Trump’s attorney, Rudy Giuliani. “Did Rudy and Chris discuss that?”

“Don, I won’t comment on what MSNBC is saying about the reporting,” Scuitto said. “I’ll just say that we’re very confident in our sources and their knowledge of Michael Cohen’s knowledge and what he’s willing to testify to the Special Counsel.”

It remains uncertain who leaked the story, since the source with whom CNN communicated remains private.
