Dem Rep. Eric Swalwell Says Russia Probe Not About Relitigating 2016: ‘Trump Won’
As Congressman Eric Swalwell (D-CA) defended Robert Mueller‘s investigation from Donald Trump‘s latest slams on Sunday, he insisted that the probe’s continued existence doesn’t mean that Trump’s presidency is in dispute.
Swalwell joined Kasie Hunt for a chat on whether Trump is winning the messaging battle by convincing America that the Russia special counsel probe is nothing but a “witch hunt.” When asked how much of the criticism against Mueller is fair, Swalwell denounced Trump for “torching every building of the FBI,” but he also said the investigation’s purpose is not to relitigate the election.
“Donald Trump won,” Swalwell said. “The best thing we can do is to make sure that the Russians or any adversary never does this again. I wrote a bipartisan independent commission bill, Republicans and Democrats support it, because I think we should look forward and harden the ballot box because we know Russia will seek to try to interfere again.”
Conservative strategist Rick Tyler followed up on Hunt’s panel by going into the nuances for why Trump is wrong to characterize the FBI’s informant on his campaign as a spy.
“A spy is one that collects information on an enemy. So if the Russians have a spy in the campaign, then that would be a spy, because they’re collecting messages…So he’s suggesting or he has declared that the Justice Department itself is the enemy. I think that’s very disturbing.”
