Democratic Strategist: We Can’t ‘Purify Ourselves Into Irrelevance’ Over Abortion
On MSNBC this morning, Lis Smith warned her fellow Democrats that their party risks being a coastal party instead of a national one if they purge pro-life candidates.
“My concern is that if we impose these purity tests that we will purify ourselves into irrelevance, and we will purify our party to the point where we can only win elections in states that touch salt water,” Smith contended.
DNC Chair Tom Perez recently said that every Democrat should be pro-choice and that is “not negotiable.” (This was after the DNC and Bernie Sanders received some flak for supporting a pro-life mayoral candidate.)
In comments flagged by the Washington Free Beacon today, Smith said that “one thing that was sort of troubling to me was on Friday, we saw Tom Perez come out and say, you know, we will only support candidates who are pro-choice.”
The “very pro-choice” MSNBC guest continued by underlining that “the crux of a fifty-state strategy is trusting the grassroots of the party — and local leadership in these parties — to pick the best leaders for their areas. And they’re not always going to agree with people like me who are from New York City.”
Smith’s advice to Democrats is a shift from 2012 when she attacked Mitt Romney as a campaign spokeswoman for former President Barack Obama:
“It’s troubling that Mitt Romney is so willing to play politics with such important issues. But we know the truth about where he stands on a woman’s right to choose – he’s said he’d be delighted to sign a bill banning all abortions, and called Roe v. Wade ‘one of the darkest moments in Supreme Court history’ while pledging to appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn it,” she [Smith] said.
