Dershowitz Rips ‘Shortsighted,’ ‘Stupid’ Impeachment of Rosenstein: ‘Stop Weaponizing Impeachment!’
Harvard law Emeritus Alan Dershowitz is panning the Congressional Republicans who filed articles of impeachment against Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
In an interview with Fox New’s Sandra Smith, Dershowitz called the anti-Rosenstein endeavor “the most shortsighted, and I have to say, stupid thing I have heard in a long time.” He also said that Republicans are “making the case for the Democrats” who want to impeach President Trump without charging him for a specific crime.
“Impeachment is supposed to be there for serious crimes: treason, bribery, other high crimes and misdemeanors,” said Dershowitz. “If you don’t like the way Rod Rosenstein is responding to your subpoena, charge him with contempt of court, bring him to court, but do not use impeachment. That just helps the Democrats who are trying to impeach President Trump. It’s a dumb, dumb decision.”
Smith pressed Dershowitz on the allegations that Rosenstein has failed to cooperate with House Judiciary Committee requests for important information. Nonetheless, the professor continued to argue that there was no crime committed, and the effort to oust Rosenstein will “backfire” when Democrats cite it while they to keep going after Trump.
“Both sides misuse the impeachment process…We have to disarm. We have to stop weaponizing impeachment, stop weaponizing criminal law. If you don’t like what somebody does, vote against them, bring them to court, but do not use impeachment, do not use criminal law to target your political enemies. It is a serious mistake, and it will backfire.”
Sounds like Dershowitz and Fox’s Andrew Napolitano are on the same wavelength today.
