Karine Jean Pierre Says White House ‘Categorically Rejects’ Rashida Tlaib’s ‘River to the Sea’ Rhetoric
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced on Wednesday that the White House “categorically rejects” Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s ‘”from the river to the sea'” rhetoric.
In the wake of the Hamas-Israel conflict in the Gaza region, Tlaib has found herself in hot water after criticizing President Joe Biden for supporting aide to Israel, accusing him of endorsing “genocide.” Moreover, in a video posted to social media on Sunday, Tlaib mentioned a six-word phrase “from the river to the sea” that led to her being punished by Congress.
The slogan refers to the chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” which many Jewish watchdog groups have labeled as anti-Semitic for voicing support for wiping Israel off the map.
As a result, the House of Representatives formally voted to censure Tlaib. A group of fellow Democratic lawmakers who voted with Republicans on the censure described Tlaib’s commentary as a “rallying cry for the destruction of the State of Israel and genocide of the Jewish people,” according to the Times of Israel.
Jean-Pierre when pressed on these developments during a press briefing on Wednesday “categorically” rejected Tlaib’s chant without directing back her censure from Congress.
“I’m not going to speak to the actions that Congress takes,” she told journalists. “When it comes to the phrase that was used from from river to the sea. It is divisive. It is hurtful to many, many find it hurtful and also many find it anti-Semitic. And so obviously, we categorically reject applying the term to this conflict.”
Israel and Hamas have been engaged in a military conflict since the start of last month when the militant group attacked the nation, killing over 1,500 people and taking 200 hostages.
