Bill Maher’s Christmas Message: Oprah, Tell Your Audience “Stop Losing Your Sh*t Over Material Stuff”

Video

Bill Maher, host of HBO‘s Real Time, and notorious religious nonbeliever, taped a harsh and hilarious “Christmas message” for his website that served as a damning critique of all Americans and of the one media figure most are too scared to attack: Oprah Winfrey. Calling Oprah’s “Favorite Things” episode “one of the most deeply disturbing things I’ve ever seen on television” was just the beginning of Maher’s memorably “cheerful” message.

Maher used Oprah’s audience as the prime example for his thesis that the real religion in America is greed and is “what at the core is so rotten about this country.” Many find Maher’s “humor” offensive, especially towards people of faith, but if you step back and view Maher as a social commentator, merely trying to improve society then maybe you too could appreciate Maher’s willingness to be politically incorrect and go after anyone and everyone to make a point. Maher concluded:

This is why everything in America gets sucked down a hole. Because what people really value is acquiring crap. Oprah’s show purports to be a lot about spirituality. If it was, then wouldn’t she tell her worshipping flock to sit down and stop losing your shit over material stuff. As for me, I don’t really know what spirituality means, but I know if you’re weeping over a sweater you don’t either. Merry Christmas everybody!

I’m not sure a millionaire like Maher should be talking about materialism,oh and while you’re watching his crapfest show on your big screen TV hooked to HD cable in your mortgaged house in your suburban mcmansion who really makes the best point?

What does your comment even mean? Maher’s statement wasn’t political. Is it possible for a political person to comment on something that is not political in nature. Then again, I hate to question someone who only tells the facts. A straight shootin’ truth teller who’s not afraid to tell it like it is.

Hang on, let me guess: your response to my comment will start with the word “fact” and be followed with an insulting comment towards me.

    Really Bill?
Your HBO audience is a bunch of closed minded clapping seals.
Maher is another dumb wealthy liberal that whines about the wealthy and global warming.

We have no idea if Maher is a materialist or not. If materialism is the accumulation of possessions, we have no idea if he blows all his money on gold-covered oven mitts or if he gives it all to his family. When it comes to wealth, he’s undoubtedly a wealthy man. But he’s also a former stand up comic and, like most comics, spent years on the road playing for $100 and a hot meal. If someone wanted to hand him lots of money for that talent, I’m sure YOU’D decline, because you’re better than most people. He didn’t. But really, none of your accusations are fair. I mean, it won’t stop you from making the accusation, since insults have more weight in political discourse than facts.

I’m not striking a blow for or against Maher. I’m striking a blow for basing your arguments on facts. Now please tell me I’m full of shit.

I love Bill Maher and I agree that part of his audience are a bunch of limousine liberals but he’s the first one to point it out and trash them… literally. I never understood why conservatives don’t like him, he’s an equal opportunity offender and the thing about global warming, how do you really leave the house and not notice a big change in weather?

redleaf, I think the point is that if Maher only talks the talk and doesn’t walk the walk, it seems a bit hypocritical. That said, I have to agree with him that there is something kinda gross about watching millions in merchandise being given away to people who seemingly aren’t truly needy. I’d much rather see Oprah challenge those companies to raise funds and follow them with cameras to see the good deeds they do with it.

It seems to be nothing more than one big giant infomercial for the products given away. I read somewhere that a mention as one of Oprah’s “favorite things” can send sales through the roof, even for a previously unknown and unprofitable company, so I’m sure there’s no shortage of companies wanting to provide goodies for her audience.

  • justlogic

Tagging Oprah is really really old, despite what the author says, everybody that thinks they are cool and edgy has done this to death.

I agree with the assertion that Oprah’s Favorite Things show has become distasteful showcase akin to pigs at the trough. I disagree with the assertion that people with money have no right to call her on it.

Fact: Mahers words. This is why everything in America gets sucked down a hole. Because what people really value is acquiring crap.
Fact: Writers note. view Maher as a social commentator.
Fact: Little Cheeser and his friends, inspired by Buck Rogers (and visions of cheese) build a rocket ship and fly to the moon

    Storyline
Little Cheeser is a young mouse who thinks he’s more grown up than he is. Mama tells him to go to bed, calling him “Mama’s little man”; he doesn’t want to. His devil side emerges and guides him to the cheese in the pantry, where his angel side appears to stop him. The devil leads him on to the smoking supplies, where he lights a pipe, then to a racy magazine, and then to the booze. The soused Cheeser goes looking for the cat, but when he finds it, the reality sobers him up quickly. The devil, meanwhile, has been trapped in a copy of Dante’s Inferno by the angel. The angel helps Cheeser escape, and he’s all too happy to go to bed and be Mama’s little man.
Hope that helps and That’s the fact!

Let me get this straight-Bill Maher who lives in a notoriously tricked out massive compound is criticizing lower and middle class women who are thrilled to get a few free give aways and Americans, in general, who like a the same material things that Maher has in abundance? Fing hypocrite. Worse, Maher’s rant reeks of moralism. Ha! The man who exclusively bangs hookers and strippers wants to lecture people about what’s important in life? The man whose notorious hatred of women means his longest relationship was with a woman nicknamed Superhead wants to tell the world what to value in life.

‘We have no idea if Maher is a materialist or not. If materialism is the accumulation of possessions, we have no idea if he blows all his money on gold-covered oven mitts or if he gives it all to his family.’

What do you mean we have ‘no idea’? Can you read? Maher gives things called interviews. Maher lives in a huge compound(he bought the lot next to his house and expanded on it)and created the ultimate party house. He hasn’t been shy about talking about it, for god’s sake.

“but if you step back and view Maher as a social commentator, merely trying to improve society…” Matt Schneider, you can’t possibly be as stupid as you seem, but then again, this is Mediaite. Or maybe you’re just plainly illiterate. Let me give you a short reading list which might allow you to discern the difference between self-aggrandizing hogwash and satire: Moliere (anything), Swift (Gulliver’s Travels), Voltaire (Candide), Fielding (Tom Jones), Lewis Carroll (anything) and of course Mark Twain (Huckleberry Finn).

  • Snidely

Does anyone but me think that Maher looks like Julian Assange? As for his thesis, is he working without compensation?

  • Chasev

Maher didn’t say “boo” about Hanukah, nor about how, if you look at the TV execs and creators that come up with this crap, that ultimately, you will find a Jew at the helm.

  • boo

Bill Maher may be a social commentator, but he drops his turds and runs away. Speaking out against Oprah? She’s above his puerile level so he knows she isn’t going to bite back. Religulous? He could be torn down to a dribbling child if he didn’t pick and choose his interviewees and which of their statements to include. What about Ron Paul? Maher thought he had a slam dunk when he first attacked Paul, then Maher realized that his audience was ahead of him and he changed his tune.

I don’t respect “social commentators” like Maher if for no other reason than this: theirs (and you can include O’Reilly, Limbaugh, Olberman, etc) is to ridicule and antagonize rather than attempt to find some kind of solution. Their place in this world is to make it worse.

  • bobmoses

“if you step back and view Maher as a social commentator, merely trying to improve society then maybe you too could appreciate Maher’s willingness to be politically incorrect and go after anyone and everyone to make a point.”

What a trite and silly comment that could be applied to any hate monger, including Maher’s peer on the right, Fred Phelps.

Look, we know that liberals love Maher because he hates the same people that they do, but please don’t insult our intelligence by calling his ignorant and juvenile hate speech as “social commentary”. What a joke.

I will never forget the Billy Graham who supported the most crooked president in American history, Richard Nixon or the Billy Graham who with Bob Hope organized a rally in support of the imoral War In Vietnam. It was called “Honor America Day”, July 4, 1970. I was in Scouting at the time. My Explorer Post, was led by a member of the John Birch Society. He insisted that our Explorer Post participate. I refused be cause at the time I was actively protesting the War In Vietnam and I had attended numerous anti-war protests in New York City and Washington D.C. I spoke up against the protest at a post meeting. He kicked me out ofter ten years in scouting. I was very proud at the time for standing up based upon a moral principle.

Billy Graham mellowed a little in his old age. He was forgiving of Bill Clinton when he was going the the repercussions of his infidelity during his presidency. I despise the joining of Christianity and right wing politics. Billy Graham represented this immoral marriage for years. This is the opposite of the teachings of Jesus.

  • goldmind

Bill Maher, the quintessential flim flammer. He is among the top condescenders in media today. A pussy at heart, but a media tyrant nonetheless. I knew a creep just like him, in my glorious drug days…and he was a punks punk. Witty, but as shallow as a puddle on a New York street. Armwood, pray tell me, you are not aspiring to the level of this miscreant? While I loathe, all these moronic hosts on television who use the “goodie gimmick” (which they don’t pay for), to build attendance and lure viewers, Maher brings a considerably worse message to the table. A brain, without substance. His comedy, is veiled, in the most artful deception I’ve seen in decades. Live by his blueprint for life, and you align yourself with what the devil epitomizes. My New Years resolution, to slap the shit out of him and Jon Stewart…simultaneously. Lucky for them…there is no god, and no justice.

  • grumbletweezer

There’s a lot of attacks on Bill Maher here coming from a variety of angles. I think that maybe distracts from the real argument or point he is making. It may be that western culture is making itself miserable because of its obsession with the material aspects of life, possibly to the point of making it quasi-religious. If that is true, then the attack on the Oprah show seems reasonable. It’s of no consequence at all whether Maher is rich or poor, avaricious or generous or of what race, creed or colour he is – it’s the argument he makes that needs attacking or supporting.

  • CAconservative

Once in a great while, Maher does say something worth hearing.

  • Tommy

So because he’s rich that makes him a materialist hypocrite? If only you could see how incredibly ignorant and closed-minded your comment sounds. =(

  • Kyle

You’re attacking Maher and not his point, it’s what’s known as an ad hominem fallacy. Very easy trap to fall into but essentially you’re avoiding the issue. I’d be willing to bet if I scroll through the comments I’d find several other people doing this too.

Just for the fax I have a challenge for you.  When you drive down the freeway to your closet where you sell yourself like a chattel slave make a list of any public places that you would cherish and find of public value.  With the vanilla Disneyland architecture one environment in America looks like any other.  Here’s a Wal-Mart, and there’s a Best Buy.  Miles of asphalt in every direction.   You can choose paper or plastic, pickle relish or sweet relish, white bread or wheat.  Guess what?  Your life is stupid and if you don’t recognize that then you’re stupid as well.

Levi I agree.  Several years ago I went back to school and took an environmental science class.  I wanted to know what the condition of the climate and well as the planet is in.  This was one of the more comprehensive science courses I ever took.  At the end I came to the conclusion that the changes coming down the pipe are far worse that I ever imagined or heard from main stream media.
