Chicago Cubs Fire DJ Who Played Smack My B**** Up as Pitcher Suspended for Domestic Violence Walked Off Mound
A DJ has been fired by the Chicago Cubs after playing the song “Smack My B**** Up” as pitcher Aroldis Chapman walked off the mound during Sundays game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Chapman was suspended 30 games this offseason for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.
The Chicago Tribune reports that the DJ, whom the Cubs refused to identify, was one of two people in control of the sound system.
Cubs president Crane Kenney issued a statement apologizing for the song choice.
The selection of this track showed a lack of judgment and sensitivity to an important issue. We have terminated our relationship with the employee responsible for making the selection and will be implementing stronger controls to review and approve music before public broadcast during our games.
Chapman was suspended following an incident in his Florida home in which the pitcher is alleged to have choked his girlfriend and fired eight gunshots in his garage. Florida prosecutors decided they did not have sufficient evidence to prosecute, but MLB suspended the then-New York Yankees pitcher for 30 games.
The Cubs traded for Chapman in late July.
