Great Moments In Thanksgiving History: White Castle Turkey Stuffing Recipe Is Unleashed On The Masses

RECIPE

Not much is known about the mysterious 1991 White Castle Cookoff — maybe it’s better that way. But one element of its legacy remains, proving to be just as relevant today as it was two decades ago: the White Castle Turkey Stuffing Recipe, which won the competition.

The rules of the recipe contest are shockingly simple: craft an original recipe, “using a complete sack of 10 White Castle hamburgers.” Twenty years ago, a family out of Columbus, Ohio, hit on a holiday winner: Thanksgiving stuffing. Add some celery, thyme, sage, and pepper to the sack of burgers, work in a little chicken broth, and stuff the turkey hole to your heart’s content.

For the official recipe and ingredient list — there’s still time to run out and get that sack of burgers! — click here. And enjoy having your eyes opened to a world you never knew existed.

Who cares about White Castle? Five Guys is clearly the best burger joint.

Had lunch at 5 guys today…3rd time in about two months.  Wifey asked me how it was, and I said,” ya know, I don’t get what all the big deal is.  I think I like those frozen white castle jobs from the supermarket better.”
Whaddaya gonna do? 5 guys oughtta be better – fries are great – burger?…eh
No accounting for taste, I guess.

I personally have to go with White Castle as one of the best and I’m fortunate to have one 5 minutes from my house!! Woof!!

Curses on all of you! None of those chains are here! I dig on both of ‘em. The only regional fast food place I can think of is Cane’s, but they don’t sell burgers, just chicken strips and a sauce that could make a robot become emotional.

You don’t eat lunch at Five Guys. It’s too greasy for a lunch item.

However, their fries are better than In N Out’s. I think going to a fast food joint for a 3rd time in a matter of two months is a pretty big deal. I mean, you don’t go there often because the caloric content is out of the roof

White Castle is not a burger you go to for dinner. It was always the drunk food you grabbed at night because they were cheap.

They have good shakes though, but none located around where I live. I had it while I lived in Indiana in college though.

Nice to hear that White Castle still exists and is still selling those yummy ever-lastiing-heart-stoppers.

I last saw a White Castle shop in 1963, in the Minneapolis, Saint Paul area somewhere.

Locally here in Tempe, AZ we have Five Guys, Fatburger, plus the usual order of suspects national chains: Wendy’s, McDonalds, Jack in the Box, What-a-Burger, and probably a few other hamburger joint chains I forgot.

A day that shall live in infamy.

Krystal is the southern version of White Castle.  Just as great tasting but now too expensive to fool with.  63 cents each for basically a bread sandwich and a sliver of hamburger with onions.  I remember when they were 29 cents each.  So, it’s amazing how easy you can make them yourself at home and have a much larger version.

    Wow, folks!
Burgers & real fries are definitely way up on my “Things I am thankful for” list.
Is this a great country or what?
    Happy Thanksgiving to all!
    Ed
