James O’Keefe On Hannity: ‘This Is A Huge Misunderstanding’

video

Appearing tonight as a guest on Hannity, James O’Keefe gave his first interview since getting arrested in the New Orleans office of Senator Mary Landrieu. Despite repeated efforts by Sean Hannity to get some specifics, O’Keefe declined to share any details about his arrest since he is still subject to an ongoing investigation. That’s not to say that its not a fascinating video.

O’Keefe did admit to “posing as something that he (was) not”, in order to, as he said, “get to the truth.” He also repeatedly defended the behavior as something that other investigative journalists have been doing for years, to which Hannity unironically chimed in “like Catch A Predator?” Despite this apparent set back, O’Keefe remains undeterred, and claims to be starting new projects soon. He ended the interview by saying, “My goal is to expose truth, to expose corruption until its gone.”

That was a good interview from Hannity. It is interesting that O’Keefe seems free to refute certain things, but others fall under the “ongoing investigation” auspices. Cherry picking? Or was he given a list of what he could or could not discuss? I still wouldn’t go on TV without my lawyer, though, to stop me from making unintentional, damaging statements.

Mediaite still hasn’t retracted the mention of bugging, when this (1) was never charged in the FBI affidavit or any other official document, (2) even law enforcement officials now admit that there was no intent to wiretap, (3) the people in question didn’t even have bugging equipment, and (4) no one has shown ANYTHING (bugging, tampering, destroying, breaking) done to ANY phone.

The other news agencies are retracting their claims, even hard-left MSNBC. Yet this slanderous accusation is still on the Mediaite site with no apology or retraction:

What gives? This is really irresponsible behavior of the highest order, and (I would think) one open to legal liability.

  • TinaFromTampa

Clearly, this man is a GREAT American who is being persecuted by the mainstream media.
I commend Mr. Hannity for his great interview.
You won’t see serious journalism like this on any other network!
Mark my words, some day, Mr. O’Keefe could become the Chairman of the Tea Party.
Or maybe even a future son-in-law for Sen. Elect Brown or maybe even former Gov. Palin.
What family would pass up the chance to have such an upstanding young Republican in their family?

  • TeaPartyAmerican

felixw How about we let him have a trial before we act like the left and start attacking the media. He has an attorney and is changed with a very serious felony. Just becuase he is a conservative like myself does not make his actions ok. Lets see if he pleads or goes to trial

  • timzank

Tina, Hilarious. This guy really bugs the shit outta you guys doesn’t he? One minute he’s a rube, next minute a cunning spy, then a rube again etc etc etc…I was gonna suggest also, you need to decide WHY you hate him, but hell, that’s never mattered to you guys in past, now has it?

  • http://trickletown.vox.com/ Trickletown

Neither rube, nor cunning spy. Just a doofus who believes his own hype.

  • felixw

TeaPartyAmerican. I have no problem with a trial. But this web site is alleging crimes that are not in the affidavit and law enforcement officials have disavowed. That is irresponsible in the highest degree. If you think he has been charged with bugging, show me where! And if you can’t, then talking about a trial for bugging is just a smear.

  • adamac

Yes, there is a misunderstanding….. It’s O’Keefe’s belief that his actions are OK and even legal. Perhaps he will get lucky —- the court could find him guilty, sentence him and give him a wake-up call.
    how to get her back

I’ve said this elsewhere, but now I’m going to say it here…

I understand from some of the media after O’Keefe’s arrest, there had been some complaints about the phones and an apples to oranges comparison between her office and David Vitter’s. But, if it was such a problem, why wouldn’t they have called on an investigative journalist from a local television station or on Fox News for one of their ambush interviews?

Why would they have called a kid from New Jersey? What was he going to do, check for a dial tone? And, how is going to “show… are they concerned about their constituents”, if he wasn’t planning to “interfere” with her phone line (which is in the arresting officer’s affidavit, as the original underlying felony)

The programming decision is curious. To be sure, credibility and journalistic integrity are not considered valuable by FOX, Hannity or by FOX and Hannity fans. Still, amongst the 97% of Americans who never tune into FOX, there is a huge credibility problem. FOX craves for broader credibility, for which witness Ailes’ defensive apologia on Sunday. How could this aid credibility? O’Keefe seems to be headed for felon status whether he is merely a hapless dufus who feels he is not subject to the laws of our nation or a master felon. Is this some sort of payback for O’Keefe by FOX? It seems unlikely in the conspiratorial sense, but FOX turned its fans into adoring O’Keefe cheerleaders. Some sort of moral imperative to give O’Keefe what he craves most, well beyond integrity, airtime? Perhaps.

What did Andrew Breitbart know and when did he know it? O’Keefe is going on TV and shooting his mouth off. And it will come back to haunt him. He’ll end up another right wing hero gone to the federal pen. I personally hope he goes to Atlanta and not to a Club Fed.

  • Cecelia

You don’t like American news agencies anyway, TheRealFakeRoyalKing.

    Remember?

You have said of U.S. choices, CNN is your preference, but overall you much prefer the wonderful “balance” you get from the… BBC and… Al Jazeira…

  • The Real Royal King

I fail to understand the relevance of your remarks, Cecelia, but I do know I am less willing than you to excuse the apparently felonious actions of anyone simply because he or she holds and espouses views which align with my own. I think you lack the objectivity perspective to comment on anything Mr. O’Keefe says or may say. That is not to say that I don’t value your views on other matters, nor does it say I am interested in seeing Mr. O’Keefe slammed with a long federal prison sentence. And, while the immediate victim, Senator Landrieu might tend to disagree, I am content to see some accountability and the angst, shame and humiliation Mr. O’Keefe (and Mr. Breitbart) are suffering. I doubt we will see Mr. O’Keefe in a respected and respectable position anytime soon. I suspect he’ll end up at FOX, shortly.

  • The Real Royal King

I personally hope he goes to Atlanta and not to a Club Fed.

    Let’s not forget Oakdale.

  • felixw

Where do you folks draw the line? How can you justify reporting on charges that don’t exist? How low will Mediaite sink?

As long as Mediaite is inventing crimes and smearing O’Keefe, why not allege murder, bank robbery and extortion. The fact remains: there is NO WIRETAPPING CHARGE. Yet this web site libels O’Keefe by claiming that this is the case. How can a media outlet state that these crimes have been charged when they haven’t? This disgusts me.

  • same2u

    Oh shut up.

  • Cecelia

TRFRK, it was your comments bemoaning a news agency the opportunity to interview a very current notable, that I was addressing.

Your relentless desire to limit the kind and amount of information that people can hear, is always shocking.

  • The Real Royal King

What’s with the “agency” terminology? Cheney’s gone. FOX is no longer an Administration Propaganda Agency.

I don’t believe I bemoaned the news agency opportunity. If I did, my language was poorly chosen. What I bemoaned was O’Keefe’s (and, likely, Breitbart’s) utter stupidity in appearing.

In the last few moments, this story may have mushroomed (with my condolences to the O’Keefe apologist Felix W.). It is really beginning to appear conspiratorial. O’Keefe going around and rubbing people’s noses in the mess he left, may be playing into this. Surely, you aren’t arguing O’Keefe acting wisely in last night’s Hannity Variety Hour?

  • more5600

So I imagine if three twenty something Arab Americans, say from Jersey City or Dearborn Michigan, dressed as telephone repairmen tried to gain access to a Senator’s office or other Federal building under false pretences everyone should be cool with that as long as they explained they were just trying to expose the truth…

  • The Real Royal King

A misunderstanding is when you invite a Kosher friend over for dinner and serve shrimp because you heard seafood is Kosher. O’Keefe is describing something a bit more serious than that.

  • felixw

You can spin this all you want, but Mediaite states that these people were charged with bugging. They have not been charged with bugging. A retraction and apology is due.

  • writer

Acorn can’t be corrupt, because O’Keefe has been charged with a crime. Sort of a reverse spin on the ‘Hitler was kind to his dog’ arguement. One thing negates the other.

  • The Real Royal King

Felix W.: You sound shrill now.

  • Ted

Terrific! No credibility with anyone except the far right, no sense of irony. This guy has a future as a political analyst with Fox.

  • felixw

TRRK, you can try to insult me personally. But this has nothing to do with me. This site claims that O’Keefe is being charged with bugging. But he is not being charged with bugging. To claim otherwise is a lie and a smear. You can rant and spin all you want, but this irresponsible and wrong. A retraction and apology are due.

  • The Real Royal King

Go back. Read the arrest report. It remains to be seen how he will be charged prior to trail. No retraction is necessary. The story was accurate at the time it was written.

  • MDT

    Leftists are freakin’ hilarious!
    Brand O’ Keefe a criminal?

Duh, okay! And round up that Mike Wallace guy yeah, and his friends, no…wait…round up ALL “60 Minute” producers…yeah and all the “20/20″ producers…yeah and…Nightline!

Yeah round em’ all up and put them away so that Acorn and other Obama co-conspirators can do their thing without being hassled by the truth.

Chavez and the Iranian maniac mullahs will be even more proud and appreciative of all of you lunatic leftists for you part in suppressing journalists.

Bye the way, you are giving him priceless press coverage.

    Freakin’ zombie morons.

    Much love. Peace. Out.

He and Palin would make a great panel, wouldn’t they? Maybe, add in Morris.

Oh, and for the record, I meant to spell some of da words wrong cause I be workin’ on my grammeritation abilities.
