South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley has been tapped by the transition efforts of President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the United Nations Ambassador for the new administration.
The move will be more formally announced Wednesday morning.
According to the Post and Courier in Haley’s home state, Haley has taken eight trips abroad since beginning her term as state Gov in 2011. She is the daughter of Indian immigrants, and is currently the youngest state Governor at 44, serving as a member of the State House of Representatives in South Carolina from 2005 until 2011. If confirmed, Haley will be our nation’s 29th U.N. Ambassador.
In February, she said, “If we elect Marco Rubio, every day will be a great day in America,” during her official endorsement for the Florida Senator for President, coming just days ahead of the state-wide primary. Rubio would go on to finish second behind Trump.
She even went as far as to take a shot of sorts at Donald Trump while giving the official Republican response to this year’s State of the Union address. “During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices,” she said at the time. She continued, “We must resist that temptation. No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country.”
Trump responded with a criticism of all things (if you can imagine that), saying, “She’s very, very weak on illegal immigration.” When pressed at the Republican National Convention this summer in Cleveland, Nikki Haley gave an unenthusiastic endorsement for Trump.
