President Obama Congratulates Rep.-Elect Kathy Hochul For NY-26 Victory

» 52 comments

Newly-elected Democratic Representative Kathy Hochul (D-NY) got to celebrate her Tuesday night victory in New York’s 26th congressional district special election (to fill the seat vacated by disgraced Rep. Chris Lee) by reading a statement of congratulations from President Obama. Hochul’s 48%-42% victory in a reliably Republican district is seen, by many, as an early bellwether of the electorate’s reaction to the Ryan budget plan, which turns Medicare into a voucher program.

The President’s statement was released quickly, an indication of how closely the White House was watching this race, but contains no mention of protecting Medicare, perhaps a missed opportunity. From The White House: (via email)

I want to extend my congratulations to Congresswoman-elect Kathy Hochul for her victory in New York’s 26th Congressional District. Kathy and I both believe that we need to create jobs, grow our economy, and reduce the deficit in order to outcompete other nations and win the future. Kathy has shown, through her victory and throughout her career, that she will fight for the families and businesses in western New York, and I look forward to working with her when she gets to Washington.

    So, the second Democrat in the race, running as a tea party candidate, made the difference.

    The voters in NY-26 will correct their mistake in 2012.

    Except the guy was a Democrat. The real story is the amount of people moving out of the state of NY.

    Can you provide me the specific line of Ryan’s plan where he suggests such a thing?

    You silly paid bloggers always argue like this is a ‘court of law’.

    This is the court of Public Opinion and the Right is being seen for what they really are and they just lost a ‘slam dunk’ of an election.

    Get ready for MUCH MORE of this to come in Wisconsin as well!

    This does show that if Dems can remain on message, they can wax the ‘Licans. An an objective fact: ‘Licans are trying to shred the social contract between citizens and their government, to clear some space for the rich to become richer. As most voters aren’t rich, this is not to their advantage — and if you point it out, in all likelihood, those voters will get it.

    I hope the Dem campaign managers, et al, are paying attention.

    Great news! I really don’t know what it’s going to take for rightwing conservative types to wake up to reality. After losing a solid Republican district in upstate New York, what do you think is going to happen in each and every election for the next couple of years. The right has no program, no viable ideas about how we should proceed in building a healthier, more prosperous society. They actually blundered into this disaster by pushing Paul Ryan’s plan to ‘reform’ Medicaire, and I’m sure they would want to do the same with Social Security. How out of touch can you get not to understand how much people love Social Security and Medicaire, and that along with the GI Bill are the best things we’ve ever received for our tax money. The Democrats are not much much more pulled together, but there’s a hard core of progressive, commited Democrats who actually care about the welfare of their fellow citizens and aren’t in the pocket of the corporative kleptocrats. People like myself, and there are millions like me find it hard to understand how people can be so brainwashed that they will vote for people who are not going to do anything good for them, God or country. They are only interested in enriching themselves and their cronies. Yes, I’m ashamed of how backward you characters are.

    Your over confidence is your weakness. The state is getting bluer everyday. Well, in a democrat district it won’t take much to lose.

    You been wrong about Trump and Daniels. So far you’re 0-2

    By exchanging the medicare system for a voucher program Republicans have made the dumbest move on a domestic program in a generation. Expect victories for Democrats in traditionally red districts across the country in 2012.

    I understand you’re an astroturfer playing the game, but clearly even you could understand that that is not a good sign for a party campaigning against “obamacare.” rite?

    President Obama Congratulates Rep.-Elect Kathy Hochul For NY-26 Victory

    On Tuesday, she captured 47 percent of the vote to Ms. Corwin’s 43 percent, according to unofficial results. A Tea Party candidate, Jack Davis, had 9 percent.

    Voters, who turned out in strikingly large numbers for a special election, said they trusted Ms. Hochul, the county clerk of Erie County, to protect Medicare.

    No doubt the Ryan Medicaide plan muddied the waters quite a bit.

    The addition of an Obama administration democrat operative ( interloper ) masquerading as a Tea Party candidate had as much to do with the Republican loss.

    Corwin’s 43% coupled with the douchebags 9% stolen from the Republican party candidate was the true game changer.

    It is beyond comprehension that the Republican leadership in Washington, just as they are failing to do with Ryan’s medicaide debacle, did not take charge over this situation before it was too late.

    does this make ryan a socialist?

    the one big difference is ryan’s plan is that while obama would use the money saved for other programs or to go towards the budget, paul ryan will take the money and give even more tax breaks by dropping the tax rate for the rich from 35 percent to 25 percent., all totaled about 4 trillion dollars over the next 10 years. (from a good article by matt taibi about the chicken-shit paul ryan.)

    it’s very funny that no matter what things in ryan’s plan are the same as the hcr that the wisconsin lady says, it’s perception that matters. nancy pelosi once famously said…”you have to wait for us to pass the bill to see what’s in it.” what she was talking about was that no matter what bs the republicans say about the bill, when it gets passed you will see that your kids can remain on your insurance until they are 26 yrs old and your health insurance must take you and your preexisting conditions. and there is no “killing grandman” or “death panels” but that is all you heard from fox and the republicans.
    now the shoe is on the other foot and, of course there will be some similarities to the hcr, but all people will remember when they vote is the commercial of paul ryan pushing your grandmother in the wheelchair over a cliff.

    kinda sucks huh?

    Living in this district I can tell you that it was a gutter campaign run by all candidates, extremely negative all around. I can also say this does nothing to change the dynamic of the House of Representatives and when the 18 month term is over this district is being eliminated by redistricting. This election has no short or long term ramification for the people in this area.

  • LOGICandREASON

    Lefties keep talking about the Ryan budget plan… LOL

    None of them seem to realize that the primary reason for the election in he first place was as a result of a disgraceful resignation of the Republican who held the seat, giving the Demonkrat the upper hand in a very disappointed constituency, and running against opponents whose votes were split in two rather than being a single one. The disappointment of the voters over Chris Lee’s actions and resignation was enough for Republicans to loose the election, the Ryan budget plan Mediscare strategy will backfire on the Demokrats eventually.

    Smart politicians would have waited for EXIT POLLS before declaring the source of the victory as the referendum on Ryan’s budget plan. Maybe Demonkrats should wait and see who got the bulk of the seniors votes.

  • LOGICandREASON

    Corwin’s 43% + Davis’s 9% would have been 52% against Kathy Hochul’s 47%

    If it was truly a referendum on Ryan’s budget plan, Hochul should have beaten both of them combined just as Marco Rubio showed Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek what a true defeat meant, by getting the combined votes both of them got in the Florida senate race last November.

    The most difficult task for Republicans is combatting the sheer stupidity of the Democrats. Obama may not be the sharpest tool in the shed but he’s smart enough to play on the close-minded idiocy of his followers. Obama is acting irresponsibly about the serious problems this nation faces. Yeah, what else is new.

    Possible, but don’t forget the 1% of the vote going to the Green Party. That probably would have gone to Holchum, so give her 48% had Murphy not run. That would only be a 4 point difference, 52 v. 48, which isn’t much, especially considering how red this district has historically been.

    And, your argument also assumes that all of Davis’ 9% would have gone to Corwin. True, most of it probably would have gone to Corwin, because Davis is a tea party guy, but polls do show that support for Corwin dropped and support for Holchum increased after Corwin said she was for Ryan’s plan.

    Only partially true. First note that republicans did the same thing with “death panels.”

    There are reasons why Ryan’s plan is dangerous. First, I wonder how many seniors will have their insurance dropped by private insurers because, after all, they are older and have higher medical bills. Second,those vouchers Ryan is proposing only keep up with the rate of inflation. The cost of medical care and insurance has been rising far higher than the rate of inflation.

    Third, what about those under 55? Seems to me that is not young enough to start such a plan. Many people in this age range are unemployed, and you often read articles about how people in this age range are in effect unemployable. If they do get a job, it very possibly will be a job that pays much less than what they are use to and, in fact, may be a job that does not provide health insurance. As they get older, and possibly have been without insurance, how in the world is a private, for-profit, insurer going to even want to insure someone who is older??? If they do, their premiums likely will be very high.

  • Zermatt2

    Rio said:

    Yes, but the election was close, and that’s something to take note of.

    Yes, but a Democrat did win a special election a few weeks ago in the 94th District Assembly of La Crosse County, one Mike Doyle, who won that seat which was held by a Republican for the previous 17 years. Lots of money was poured into the Republican’s campaign, including money from Karl Rove’s camp.

    Fox News and Republicans/CONS can’t be happy at all: Look at the following latest poll numbers for Obama.
    Approval/Disapproval (%)
    Gallup = 53/41
    Rasmussen = 50/48
    Fox News = 55/41
    PEW = 50/39
    Quinnipiac = 52/40
    NBC/WSJ = 52/41

    Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) Quinnipiac: 29% Approval/57% Disapproval
    Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) Quinnipiac 30% Approval/46% Disapproval

    I see the President had time to congratulate Hochul for winning but had no time to offer his concerns and sympathy for the people of Joplin and in general of MO. Just when I finish with my Guinness and some Champagne I will see you on Sunday. Good Mr. President we appreciate your non concern for the tragedy that is taking place in your country.

    NY26 usual voter totals are 250k… Tuesday vote total was only 100k…
    Hochul had only 48k… that’s 25% of usual voter turnout…
