Sanders Sets Record: More Campaign Donations Than Any Non-Incumbent in U.S. History

Bernie Sanders has made it a staple of his campaign platform that he is only accepting private donations, as a sign that his politics can’t be bought by corporate interests. Sanders campaign hit a milestone in September when he became the first 2016 contender to receive donations from a million people, and today, they announced that they hit another: two million.

In his new ad, Sanders describes how presidential hopefuls cannot hope to “level the playing field” for all Americans by accepting big money through the current campaign finance system. The campaign did not say how much it raised, but The Hill reported that they pulled in more than $3 million this week, that their average contribution was less than $30, and that their previous quarter of $26 million put their numbers close to Hillary Clinton.

Sanders has already taken in more individual donations than President Obama did at this point in 2008. Aides to Sanders told Washington Post that they expect numbers to keep rising, and that Sanders has received more donations than any non-incumbent candidate in the nation’s history.
