A fundraising email from the Tea Party Patriots is causing a stir after it “accidentally” went out featuring a photo of Karl Rove in a Nazi SS uniform. The email, a portion of which can be seen below, issues an attack on Rove for wanting to “crush the Tea Party movement and protect the big-government status quo” directly beside the Photoshopped image.
Now, according to POLITICO, the group has issued a public apology for what they are calling a “mistake”:
“We apologize to Mr. Rove. While we may have strong disagreements with Mr. Rove on the future of conservatism, we want to be clear this imagery is absolutely unacceptable and are working to ensure this type of mistake doesn’t happen again.”
Jameson Cunningham, a spokesman for Tea Party Patriots, is insisting that the Nazi image was not intentionally placed in the email, pointing to a Bing image search for “Karl Rove” that brings up Rove’s famous thumb-on-nose photo first and the Nazi photo second. If the group did intend to use the first photo, it would help explain the email’s subject line, “Wipe the Smirk Off Karl Rove’s Face.”
While Democrats have compared President Bush to Hitler and Tea Party Republicans have compared President Obama to Hitler, this may mark the first time a Republican group has used the Nazi analogy on one of its own. The GOP’s civil war has officially reached the next level.
