Twitter Goes Nuclear on Piers Morgan for Scolding ‘Little Piece of Work’ Nicki Minaj
Piers Morgan is a worldwide Twitter trend right now, and it’s all because of his incredibly provocative post about Nicki Minaj.
First, some background. Both Minaj and Taylor Swift got nominated for VMA awards, but Swift’s “Bad Blood” got a nomination for Video of the Year, while Minaj’s “Anaconda” didn’t. Minaj complained about what that says about the industry, and Swift thought it was a dig at her. Here’s their now-infamous Twitter exchange:
If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year

@NICKIMINAJ I've done nothing but love & support you. It's unlike you to pit women against each other. Maybe one of the men took your slot..
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Huh? U must not be reading my tweets. Didn't say a word about u. I love u just as much. But u should speak on this. @taylorswift13
— NICKI MINAJ (@NICKIMINAJ) July 21, 2015
@NICKIMINAJ If I win, please come up with me!! You're invited to any stage I'm ever on.
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) July 21, 2015
Basically, Minaj’s contention is that artists like her don’t get recognized as much as artists like Swift because of certain biases in the music industry towards race and body shape.
And then in walked Piers Morgan, with his usual humility:
Warning to Black Twitter:
I don’t think you’re going to like my column about @NICKIMINAJ.
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 22, 2015
And Morgan’s post is actually titled “Don’t play the race or skinny cards, Ms Minaj – you’re just a stroppy little piece of work whose video wasn’t as good as Taylor Swift’s.”
He recalls how Minaj was rude to him when he tried to say hello to her when she guested on America’s Got Talent. Morgan calls out Black Twitter not just for going after Swift, but for “collectively leap[ing] on any perceived racial insult or bias to expel their indignation.”
He calls Minaj’s claims “hogwash” and scolds her for playing the race card:
I have no sympathy with Nicki Minaj, who emerges as a whiny brat that just doesn’t like losing.
Her charges of racism and big-bodyism are frankly laughable when you consider that three of the five nominations for Video of the Year are black artists.
Well, as Morgan predicted, lots of people didn’t like what he had to say, and, well, this is what ensued:
yes I think EVERYONE's been waiting with bated breath to hear one white british dude's opinion on this affair @piersmorgan @NICKIMINAJ

Was halfway into reading fucktard Piers Morgan's """article""" until I got so overcome with rage and anger I nearly set my laptop on fire

“I can’t wait to hear Piers Morgan’s opinions on women of colour.”
— No one. Ever.
— Stuart Gibson (@stuartgibson) July 22, 2015
Is anyone surprised that @piersmorgan described black Twitter as aggressive? That trope is as old as racism itself. Opinionated ≠ Aggressive
— Jackée Harry (@JackeeHarry) July 22, 2015
Piers Morgan, across the pond, has been transfixed with American Blackness. I suspect because prodding it is the only way to stay relevant

Is there anything more insulting than a rich, white man from England trying to minimize the plight of the American black male?@piersmorgan
— Horatio Sanz (@MrHoratioSanz) July 22, 2015
@piersmorgan is a white privilege man telling @NICKIMINAJ, and essentially every black female artist, that what they go through isn't real.

Piers Morgan is openly saying "I'm about to troll black people for attention b/c I know you'll take the bait." I'm blocking anyone who +
— BGD (@BlackGirlDanger) July 22, 2015
Do not read Piers Morgan's articles. He trolls black people for a living and wants to get a rise out of us. Don't satisfy him.

"Warning to Black Twitter" is…a phrase that is frequently an apt substitute for "I'm not racist but…"

LMAOOOOO so Piers Morgan has simply got a vendetta against Nicki because she didn't take pictures with his kids in 2011 at AGT? WOW.
— Tosin (@tossprint) July 22, 2015
Morgan, of course, defended himself:
I love the trolls who glibly brand me ‘racist’ but can never actually point to a single racist thing I do or say.
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 22, 2015
For the record, I like #BlackTwitter. But if you’re going to dish it out, you’ve got to take it too. Debate isn’t a one-way street.
