Sex Sells, But Which One? Marketing To Straight Males Can Only Go So Far

Picture 3 video

If you’re not a particularly big fan of Project Runway, you probably skipped out on Piers Morgan last night, whose ads spent the day reminding viewers he would be interviewing Heidi Klum. If you’re not particularly a fan of Project Runway and also a fan of 1980s New Romanticism, you would have been sorely disappointed, as the second half of the program featured and interview with 3/4ths of Duran Duran. As far as influence and conversational potential, the decision to advertise one over the other appears bizarre, but with the obvious difference between the two guests, one has to ask– is eye candy not all created equal?

Sarah Palin Dismisses Gloria Steinem’s Brand Of Feminism: ‘It’s Very Passé’

Picture 4 video

It’s hard to enter a feminism feud between Sarah Palin and Gloria Steinem with low expectation’s for the latter’s thoughts, if only given the extra three decades Steinem has studying the subject and being at the vanguard of the feminist movement. And yet, on Fox News today with Megyn Kelly, Palin tore the feminist mantle out from under Steinem, somewhat disgruntled that the latter had made sex an issue and dismissing her claim Palin was bad for women as a relic of another era.

Rep. Allen West Tries On Feminism: ‘It Is Spartan Women Who Raise Spartan Men’

Picture 1

21st century feminism is a difficult thing. With women at the forefront of politics and closer to equal footing than they were decades ago, pointing out gender for gender’s sake without coming off as misogynistic has becoming fairly difficult. But here’s a vivid example of how not to be a feminist. In a speech this week, GOP Rep. Allen West encouraged women to follow the “Spartan” model: “it is Spartan women who raise Spartan men.”

The End of Sexism

joanne mcneil

There are no sexist men in the 21st century, only stupid men. It’s time we reframe everyday misogyny in the West not as cagey determined acts, but evidence of staggering obtuseness. Consider: “This journalist has read so few books, he listed the top 25 novels of the decade and there are no women on it.” [...]

The Women of The Daily Show vs. Jezebel

Screen shot 2010-07-06 at 8.26.56 PM

Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Who’s a clawing, cat-fighting bitch? No one. They’re both right: The women of the Daily Show have an awesome job, at an awesome place, and do awesome work. But the male/female ratio on late-night comedy shows is not awesome. Which Jezebel was 100% right to examine.

Newsweek Cover Paints Sarah Palin As A Prophet

Photoshop is a nifty little tool. With the click of a mouse you can retouch a blemish or saw off a good chunk of someone’s hip bone. For the cover of their June 21 issue, the design team at Newsweek booted up the program to stick a shiny gold halo around Sarah Palin‘s head.

Bill O’Reilly Wants To Know Why Feminists Are Attacking Sarah Palin

oreily_palin video

Bill O’Reilly wants you to know that he is smarter than feminist playwright Eve Ensler. After showing a clip of Ensler asking why people give attention to someone (Sarah Palin) whose “intelligence hasn’t really evolved yet,” O’Reilly also claimed that if he and Ensler were to have a debate, he “would pound her into pudding with intellectual arguments.” Hyperbole or not, hearing O’Reilly chastise feminists for any critiques on Palin struck an odd chord, but made for strangely compelling video.

5QQ: Leslie Sanchez (Plus, Book Excerpt!)

You may recognize Leslie Sanchez from CNN, since she was one of their A-team pundits during last-years long, crazy march to election day. Like the rest of us, she saw how the campaign of Hillary Clinton unfolded, how Michelle Obama was perceived and characterized, and the wrench thrown into the works late last August that [...]

New Yorker Cartoon Asks: Why Aren’t There More Women on Panels?

Several months back, I attended an all-female panel assembled to discuss why women don’t typically participate on media panels. I noted in my review that “the goal was to demonstrate to future conference planners and columnists that women offer a unique voice and belong on the panelist circuit.” As these issues take great deals of [...]

GELF “Overlooked Women In Media” Panel, September ’09 (VIDEO)

Here is a video of the GELF “Overlooked Women In Media” panel from September 2009, featuring Mediaite’s Rachel Sklar and Glynnis MacNicol, CNET’s Caroline McCarthy, Jezebel’s Anna Holmes and Slate Double X’s Jessica Grose.

Mad Men Takes Over Twitter

This is the kind of viral marketing that executives dare not even dream about. In fact, while outlets like Gawker have come under fire for their use of sponsored content like Bloodcopy, the folks behind AMC’s “Mad Men” are reaping huge PR dividends for free. Their personalized icons have swept over Twitter like a nuclear daisy.
