Bob Woodward: Donald Trump ‘Is Aspiring To Be The New Joe McCarthy’

The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward appeared on Morning Joe to discuss some behind the scenes details regarding the White House personnel changes involving Leon Panetta and David Petraeus, but also took time to scold the media for hyping the “manufactured controversy” with President Obama’s birth certificate. Though Mika Brzezinski took issue with Woodard and didn’t understand his assessment that “the news media has got to get a handle on itself on this,” as she argued if Obama held a press conference on the issue, then it is worth discussing.

Woodward first addressed Donald Trump:

“Let’s call things what they are. Donald Trump, I think, was or maybe still is aspiring to be the new Joe McCarthy. No evidence, but you make an assertion and you look at these things Trump said . . . people interviewing him at that moment should have said ‘what’s your evidence.’ Trump has no evidence, and when you have no evidence you have nothing and the discussion of the subject should end.”

It seemed Woodward’s complaint was focused on the media’s role in hyping the accusations prior to yesterday, while Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough were mere focused on defending the media’s coverage of the issue since Obama released the birth certificate. Scarborough couldn’t understand why Obama engaged the crazy issue in the first place. And Woodward concluded “I kind of feel sorry for [Obama], quite frankly.”

Woodward is astute here. Trump appeals to and panders to our basest instincts of irrational fear, racism, xenophobia, and to do so exploits our ignorance. That is textbook McCarthy and the Republican SOP since the Raygun years.

I agree Trump’s behavior and the media’s failure to response to him was as insidious as the McCarthy allegations. For almost two weeks, Trump’s birth allegations went unchallenged by the media. In the past, week or so there were interviews that started to challenge Trump. But no media source stood up and demanded to see his evidence. No one ask for the names of his people on the ground. Even when he accused “people in room” of writing about Obama’s school grades, no one asked him to point out the author of such writings. MSM did not take Trump seriously. But racism and bigotry should always be taken seriously. Wittingly or unwittingly, for the most, part the media gave Trump a free ride, because he was Trump. The MSM was complicit in helping Trump to stir-up racism and bigotry. Members of the MSM were too chummy with Trump to report on him objectivity.

On Morning Joe, when Mika and Joe first talk to Trump on the phone, she had a few choice words for Trumps comments after their coversation was over, but Joe tried to gloss it all over. Trump was not ask for any evidence by either Mika nor Joe.

Trump for President even if on a third party. You got Obama to show his birth certificate. People started realizing someone who bows down and goes to American hating preachers like Jeremiah Wright and Charles Smith might not have been born in America or just don’t like America like his wife.
