CBS Reporter Lara Logan: “U.S. Is Failing To Deal” With The Terrorism Reality

Video

Before Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer had time to share his cheerful holiday poem, CBS Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Lara Logan provided viewers with a sobering reality about the ongoing war on terror. In addition to saying everyone knows Osama bin Laden is in Pakistan, she also claimed most other terrorist leaders are hiding out there as well, and displayed disappointment with U.S. foreign policy for not more aggressively handling the situation.

Logan revealed:

Recently I learned that not only does the U.S. know where these [terrorists] are inside Pakistan . . . but we have information right down to their phone numbers. So the Afghans have this information, the U.S. has it, and the Pakistanis have it, but no one’s acting on it. . . . Vast majority of terrorist leaders that threaten the United States today are located inside Pakistan, and the U.S. is failing to deal with that.

It doesn’t seem Logan is advocating for a full-scale invasion of Pakistan, but merely asserts that the U.S. has placed too much trust in Pakistan and ultimately sheds light on the growing and legitimate concern that if the terrorists are really in Pakistan, then why is the current military stategy so focused on Afghanistan? Regardless of the answer, it’s refreshing to hear talk of such serious issues from the perspective of a war correspondent, which seems increasingly rare these days on the Sunday morning political affairs shows.

What’s even more “increasingly rare” is one of the MSM outlets actually airing this type of real journalism. Must have slipped by the editors.

Give me a break. So am I to believe she’s some sort of international terrorism and intelligence expert? Yeh, some thrill seeking journalist knows more about the intelligence surrounding the war on terrorism than the actual people who have spent their entire careers working in intel? What a joke. And what’s more, she knows what policies the US should be pursuing. She knows better than all those folks who spent years in the field after getting their Masters and Doctorates at the best public policy schools in the world. Yeh, we should openly go into a country with sovereign borders and an elected government and essentially wreak havoc within Pakistan, a nation where most people already believe in US conspiracy theories and anti-US sentiment is as common as drinking tea. Real smart thinking there Miss Logan. Did she ever think that if we kill these supposed leaders of terrorist organizations who’s cell phone numbers we have, we would lose our primary source of direct information relating to planning of terrorist attacks on US soil? If we took out those leaders, we’d be totally in the dark and lone operators would have a much greater chance of carrying out successful attacks against the US.

Honestly, she sounds like the guys who sit on the bar stools at my bar pontificating on what the US should because they think they no better. Lara, the issue is much more complex than just going in to Pakistan and killing a few leaders of terrorist groups. Ask Israel. They’ve assassinated one terrorist leader after another, yet have attacks against Israel ever stopped? No.

Tell the Neocons that. They are using the US army as a private army to fight other countries war.

Fact: This was on Dan Rathers old station? Wow I wondered how long Kool Aid drinkers stayed in that daisy sniffing state! What does terrorist mean on CBS?

Holy Crap! Did nobody tell you, Sky? The Democrats won the election in 2006, and controlled Congress since then. Oh, and the Democratic nominee won the Presidency in 2008! It’s YOUR SIDE who has been in charge for a while!

I can’t believe nobody mentioned that to you! I guess you’ll revise your comment, knowing it was YOUR party who has been running things, and fighting “other countries’ wars.”

    PS-
Remember all the left-wing stars who came out to champion helping Darfur? Was that one of those “other countries’ wars” that we shouldn’t (and wound up not) fight? I wonder why was that an okay war to fight (or try to fight), even though it didn’t really effect us… but the other ones weren’t/aren’t?

That’s a really good question for you, a racist. What does “terrorist” mean?

I can’t imagine you have a single bone of self-awareness that sees the irony in this sentence given your prior paragraph.

What? Ever heard of Richard Engel? He’s the best of the best notwithstanding his NBC affiliation. He was I believe the first to report the deterioration of the Afghanistan war early this year. Another very good correspondent was on CNN (I forget his name) and let go earlier this year. Both of these guys also understand and speak Arabic.

To play Devil’s advocate, why should Logan’s words be trusted? Maybe the person feeding her this “intel” is using her as a proxy to shape public opinion vis media to justify invasion of Pakistan. If the US knows precisely where Osama is, they do not need the US military to go get him. That’s why the special forces and the CIA exist. They can get to him. All they need to do is pay their way to snatch him. I am very suspicious and skeptical of the whole thing. Maybe Wikileaks can shed some light on what is REALLY going on. ;)

when Bin Laden was in Tora Bora and the US Intelligence people that were following him ask President Bush they needed 600 more troops to close all the exits, the answer was “we don’t want to risk more lives” (or something to that effect). what? are you kidding me? and then they had no problem going into a Quagmire in Iraq. That doesn’t make sense.
Now Lara Logan says that everybody knows in what area Bin Laden is but nobody is doing anything.
mmm… I guess all those TSA operations and x-ray machines and all those DOD contractors are having enough work “combating terrorism”. Why kill the Chicken that lays the golden eggs (i.e. Bin Laden)?

Is this trip down “memory lane” really necessary?

Careful there Lara. You don’t want to sound too pro-American. All the far-leftist America haters at the Huff n’ Puff Post will turn on you!

You sound like the typical vacuous neocon. It’s that “pro-Amrican” bullshit that got us into that quagmire to begin with you asshat!

Lara is an actual journalist, rare these days. The Obama Wars book makes very clear that Pakistan is where the terrorists are,but it’s a difficult challenge since it’s an ally with issues.

I’m just glad there’s still some real journalists out there…

    …and nuclear weapons.

We’re already engaged there in an undeclared war of attack drone remote controlled aircraft. Putting U.S. boots on the ground in Pakistan could destabilize that country and put those nukes at risk of whatever outcome a popular uprising might lead to. Basically, I think Lara is misleading. We’re failing to deal with that? How many undeclared wars are enough for her?

Gee…and all this time I thought it was for all those trans-Near East gas pipelines, or to make Dick Cheney rich though all that Haliburton money, and that it had nothing to do with the Muslim terrorists having a safe haven for plotting their attacks on the Great American Satan.

But alas, I was wrong all that time because I was just told by one of my betters that being “pro-American” is “bullshit”.

Tell you what genius, why don’t you put your money where your mouth is and go join the Taliban since your both on the same team.

Hey…thanks alot for telling me something I’ve know for at least 8 years!
But it doesn’t matter where she’s from. What matters is that during the Iraq war, she was a favorite of the far-left America haters because of her daily saccharine sweat “America sucks” reports live from Iraq, where she was sleeping around with some of the other anti-American “war correspondents”.

  • newsjunkie

The fact that she thinks she has sources in the intelligence community who leak information to her shows how amateurish she is. No information is ever leaked from the intel community. If they told her something like where terrorist leaders are in Pakistan or that they have those leaders’ cell phone numbers, it was a strategic decision to do so. The intel community uses the press for their own purposes. She needs to open her eyes a little wider and be a little more skeptical and less eager to believe everything her sources tell her.
