CNN’s Tapper Grills McCain over His Bergdahl Deal Flip-Flopping

Yesterday CNN’s Jake Tapper called out John McCain for what looked a lot like flip-flopping over the Bowe Bergdahl case, and today Tapper grilled McCain about his initial support of a deal he now condemns and ridicules as something that could put America’s national security at risk.

Months ago, McCain said he “would be inclined to support” a prisoner exchange in which the U.S. handed over Gitmo detainees for Bergdahl, but now he doesn’t. And the reason, McCain argued, is because “the details are outrageous” and it’s completely unacceptable that dangerous Taliban fighters will be back on the battlefield.

He told Tapper the deal puts American servicemen and women at risk, and dangerous terrorists shouldn’t be released, even for a deal like this. Tapper replied, “But Senator, they’re not going to free members who are members of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, I mean, it’s going to be bad guys who are released in an exchange for an American.”

As for the charges of hypocrisy, McCain dismissed the “attack by the Obamaphiles” and charged that anyone accusing him of flip-flopping is lying.
