‘Entertainment Welfare’ Gutfeld Says ‘Only Reason’ Kimmel and Colbert Were on the Air Is They ‘Toed’ Anti-Trump Line
Fox News star Greg Gutfeld said the main reason Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert have been on the air for so long is due to “entertainment welfare,” where their corporate bosses are happy with them, even if their ratings are bad, because they have dutifully “toed” the anti-Donald Trump line for years.
Gutfeld shared his thoughts on Kimmel’s September suspension, as well as Colbert’s recent cancelation, during a sit down interview with The New York Times on Saturday. Reporter David Marchese asked Gutfeld what his “immediate reaction” was to hearing about both events.
Here is what the Gutfeld! host told him:
“Why did it take so long? I had crushed them like bugs, David. I’d crushed them and thrown them into the wind, and they were still here. I call it entertainment welfare. The only reason why they were around for so long, despite the fact that their numbers were dropping, was the fact that they toed the line. I don’t think it was political. I didn’t know anybody — and I’m counting my many liberal friends — who watched them, and I think it’s because it wasn’t entertainment anymore. It was more like a therapy session for people that were upset at the world.”
He then pushed back on Marchese asking if there were any “larger corporate-political considerations” that went into Kimmel’s brief suspension or Colbert getting booted.
“I don’t think so. There’s never been anybody who’s ever really folded because of Trump saying, ‘You suck.’ Was it extra noise in the story? Probably,” Gutfeld said. “But I honestly think that the grumbling was already there.”
Kimmel was suspended from Sept. 17 to Sept. 22, after he implied the man who murdered conservative influencer Charlie Kirk was a Trump supporter — contrary to reports. Here is the comment he made on his Sept. 15 show that led to his suspension:
“The MAGA [is] gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
And Colbert, similarly, has been ripping Trump for years on his CBS program. During Trump’s first term, to just cite one example, Colbert cracked the president’s mouth was being used as “Vladimir Putin’s c*ck holster.”
