Morning Joe Skewers Tucker Carlson by Reminding Him That Evan Gershkovich Is In a ‘Gulag’ For Reporting on Russia

MSNBC’s Morning Joe threw shade at Tucker Carlson for his false claims that Western journalists had no interest in telling Russia’s side of the story in its war against Ukraine — and included a reminder that an American journalist was currently in a Russian prison for doing exactly that.

Without naming Carlson, co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski discussed how House Republicans were playing a “dangerous game” with Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing them of doing former President Donald Trump’s “bidding” and, in turn, doing Putin’s bidding.

This led Scarborough to mention “somebody that we know, that we used to know, going over, doing Vladimir Putin’s bidding, attacking Western journalists, saying ‘if only Western journalists would have come over here and tried to even report fairly on the war.'”

He was referring to Carlson, who announced on Tuesday that he was in Russia to interview Putin for his show on Twitter/X. And to throw even more water on Carlson’s claim that Western journalists didn’t want to hear Russia’s side of this story, Scarborough held up a page from The Wall Street Journal, the paper that employs American reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been imprisoned by the Russian government for reporting on Russia for 314 days as of this writing:

Scarborough: There have been Western journalists that have gone over and tried to report fairly on the war, and they’re in jail. They’re in gulags right now, with the person, because Vladimir Putin doesn’t want, Willie, Western journalists, going over and asking honest questions, fair questions. He’ll he’ll let puppets talk doing but nobody else.

Willie Geist: Yeah. He’ll let a certain kind of journalist in for an interview, but not the ones who ask the questions. And I assure you, NBC and every other news organization in the Western world has a request in for an interview with Vladimir Putin. So it’s not for a lack of trying, that’s for sure.
