‘Some People Think I’m High When I Say That’: Smerconish Tells Eric Trump His Dad Needs To Be a ‘Bridge Builder’

Michael Smerconish took Eric Trump to task Saturday, asking why the president doesn’t turn his energy toward major domestic issues affecting average Americans, which would require cooperation with the Democrats.

The CNN host began by complimenting Donald Trump’s foreign policy wins, and said he admired Trump’s “hustle.”

“In the book you call him, I think, the Energizer Bunny in a red tie,” Smerconish said, referring to Eric Trump’s new book about his famous family.

“But my serious point is to say that hustle — why isn’t it applying to some of these major domestic issues? I’m thrilled with what he’s doing abroad, but whether it’s the debt, whether it’s it’s health care longterm, whether it’s dealing with 10 million people here longterm, like, why can’t we address that now while he has the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House?” he asked.

Eric Trump went on to mention all the policies his dad has to “fix” from the Biden administration, before taking aim at cities like Chicago that are run by Democrats.

“I’m just, I want to see the art of the deal for compromise,” Smerconish said. “I am all about building bridges and putting people together, and there’s just too much antagonism going both ways. I truly want to talk about the book, but if you have a final comment on what I just said about I want ‘Trump the bridge builder,’ and some people think I’m high when I say that, but that’s what I want to see.”

“Yeah, listen, my father would love nothing more than cooperation, and he has never gotten cooperation,” Eric Trump said before airing a list of grievances about “lawfare.”

He added, “Michael, it’s awfully hard to do when you’ve spent the last 10 years trying to destroy a person, and their family, and a nation, and their movement — it’s really hard to sit down.”
