‘Cyberguy’ Speculates About AWS Global Outage on Fox News

“The Cyberguy” Kurt Knutsson could only speculate whether the worldwide Amazon Web Services outage was an attack or a technical glitch after numerous websites failed on Monday morning.

Appearing on Fox & Friends Monday morning, Knutsson touched on the speculation that something nefarious was behind the widespread outage.

“If  you think about it, ‘How did this happen?’ We immediately go to, ‘Oh, are we under attack, or is this a technical glitch?'” Knutsson said.

He also admitted that he didn’t have control of his own home security system as thousands of websites went down around the world.

“Ring doorbell, which is also Ring Protect, their alarm system — I actually have that. It went down and actually triggered our alarm system and then, of course, the call comes to disable that or call it a false alarm. That didn’t work. I still have no control of our security system or our cameras. And I’m yet just one little blip in this,” he said.

When asked by Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt what went wrong, Knutsson could not offer a clear answer.

“We don’t know,” he said, adding: “We know that it originated in the U.S. Or we know that’s affecting the U.S. And that trickled down. So I can’t tell you exactly what’s at root here. We will find out. We’re gonna continue to look into it. We have no indication that this is a cyberattack as of this moment. But, it is — it does really emphasize and underscore how vulnerable we are as a country when we have so much of our basic services going through one tube that can be cut off like this.”

Knuttsen’s remarks came after thousands of websites under the Amazon Web Services umbrella went down early Monday morning.

The sites affected included Snapchat, Ring camera, Venmo, Fortnite, and Roblox.

The issue appeared to be mostly resolved later Monday.

“The good news is that this kind of issue is usually relatively fast (to resolve),” cybersecurity expert Patrick Burgess told the Associated Press.

Burgess added that there were no indications to suggest the outage was a cyberattack.
