Eric Cantor On Need To Offset Funds For Tornado Victims: We ‘Don’t Have Unlimited Money’

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor appeared on Face the Nation with substitute host Harry Smith and spoke about his earlier call for federal disaster relief funds to be offset with cuts to spending elsewhere in the budget. Cantor did not back down from the statement promising “Congress will find the money” and also confident “it will be offset.”

Cantor makes it clear that he doesn’t dispute the fact that there is a federal role for government in helping with the recovery efforts in Joplin, Missouri. However, the days of money endlessly flowing out of Washington for any reason whatsoever are over, according to Cantor. He argues, “families don’t have unlimited money and really neither does the federal government.” Given President Obama’s own pledge to the Joplin community to do whatever takes to help them get back on their feet, the amount of a potential offset will be substantial and the battle to determine where the amounts come from is not likely to be pretty.
