‘It Was Complicated…’ Cheryl Hines Takes Long Pause After Being Asked About RFK Jr Teaming Up With Trump
Actress Cheryl Hines took a long pause Tuesday after The View co-host Sunny Hostin pressed her on how she’d felt about her husband, Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.’s decision to jump on board with President Donald Trump during the last presidential election.
Kennedy, an ex-Democrat who had been running his own campaign for election as an independent, dropped his own bid in August 2024 to endorse Trump. After winning the election, Trump then tapped him and former Democratic lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard as honorary co-chairs on his presidential transition team before nominating Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services.
Hines was talking about Covid and Trump’s first term drive to accelerate manufacture and distribution of the vaccinations, which hosts had contrasted with Kennedy’s rollback policies, when Hostin abruptly brought up her husband’s 2024 break for MAGA.
“So you were supportive of his decision to support Trump?” Hostin asked.
“I was – at the beginning…” Hines began, pausing for a moment.
“What’s the word?” she laughed awkwardly: “Um… I was guarded about it.”
She continued: “It was complicated, right? Because it’s a big change politically. He starts out as a Democrat. I started out – when I first… when I first registered to vote, I registered as an independent. Through the years I changed to a Democrat and now I’m back to independent. So for Bobby to, in the course of a year and a half, two years, go from a Democrat to now working with President Trump, that’s a long – that a leap.”
She added: “But also it’s a leap of faith because Bobby has a lot of supporters. He has a lot of supporters that are Republicans, independents, Democrats.”
Co-host Joy Behar interrupted: “You know, Cheryl, it’s not fair to really put you on the spot about him.”
“Thank you,” Hines replied.
