Lindsey Graham: Congress Won’t Pass DACA Bill Without Trump Who ‘Needs to Sell This Deal’
Well this is a potentially interesting development.
Senator Lindsey Graham appeared on CNN’s New Day this morning to addressed yesterday’s Trump administration announcement to end DACA after a six month transition. That six months is designed for U.S. Congress to figure out how best address the issue of DREAMers: find a way to legally include them as U.S. Citizens or deport them.
Earlier we’d learned through the reporting of Maggie Haberman that President Donald Trump was quite conflicted over this process, but noted that this was a clear campaign promise that has ostensibly painted the White House into a corner. A skeptic might see the Administration’s efforts to push this legislative decision to Congress as a shrewd political tactic designed to weight them with the yoke of an ostensibly no-win decision.
But Graham was having none of it, making it clear that this needs to be every bit of a Trump policy as a GOP establishment decision. “We’re not going to pass a bill without presidential help,” adding “He needs to sell this deal.”
Why is this an interesting development? Well the brewing conflict between Capital Hill Republicans and the White House seems to rear its head on nearly every recent policy decision — from Health Care Reform to raising the debt ceiling to an ongoing investigation alleged Russian Collusion to.
Graham seems to be sending a message to the White House that signals that a new immigration and amnesty policy must be a decision born from agreement from both the legislative and executive branches of government.
