Maher, Matthews and Seth Rogen Tackle Cosby: Women’s Stories ‘So Similar’

After making some pretty biting jokes about it in his monologue, Bill Maher and his guests–– including Chris Matthews and actor Seth Rogen––tackled the rape accusations against Bill Cosby. And to Maher, it can’t be a coincidence if so many women without financial incentives are coming forward with the same stories, because unlike with Woody Allen, he pointed out, this is more than just “he said, she said.”

Matthews was really down about the whole thing, saying, “I don’t root for this news to be true.” Maher and Rogen pointed out an uncomfortable truth about pop culture: there have been comedies in the past few decades where a man taking advantage of a woman was put into a comedic setting.

Roland Martin pointed out the problem here is that everyone’s stuck, because the statute of limitations is up, Cosby won’t get to give his say in court, and he’s been tried like mad in the court of public opinion. He also told Maher that the reason so many women are coming out is that when one of them speaks, it emboldens the others and they don’t feel alone.

Cosby, of course, has remained mum (relatively so) on the subject, to the point where he just sat in dead silence when asked about it in a recent interview. Rogen said “people feel disrespected by that” and Maher wanted Cosby to say something on the subject, but Martin said not a single PR person he’s spoken to would advise Cosby to open up at all.
