Ro Khanna Laughs Off Trump Nobel Prize Talk After Gaza Deal: ‘Kissinger’ Won, ‘Gandhi Didn’t’

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) laughed off the relevancy of the Nobel Peace Prize – noting that former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger won the prize while “Gandhi didn’t” – but noted it’s a good thing if that is what’s “motivating” President Donald Trump.

The House Democrat’s comments came after Trump announced late Wednesday that Israel and Hamas had both signed his Gaza peace deal, with the potential to formally bring an end to a two-year conflict and see the return of Israeli hostages.

Appearing on CNN, host Chris Hayes asked Khanna whether he “worried” Trump had pushed the deal through just in time to clinch the prize, which the Nobel Committee will announce Friday.

“I don’t mean this as a joke,” Hayes said, asking whether the congressman believed “there’s some desire to get something done that may not then endure in even the medium term.

Khanna replied: “I was talking to Diane, your producer, right before the show, and I said, ‘Kissinger got the Nobel Peace Prize and Gandhi didn’t.’ So I’m not sure how much the Nobel Peace Prize means, but it means a lot to Donald Trump.”

He added: “And look, if that’s what’s motivating him to put pressure on Netanyahu and say, enough, stop the bombing and to put pressure on Hamas to release the hostages, fine.”

He continued: “I mean, I really don’t care, frankly, whether Trump gets credit, whether we get credit. This has been the most horrific, gut-wrenching war. And I just want it to end, and I want us to start to work towards peace. And so there’s some issues, Chris, that are about politics, this one for me is genuinely not, there’s been too much suffering and I’m hoping that this works.”

“I share your hope profoundly,” the host replied.
