The View Condemns Trump Border Policy in Fiery Segment: This Will ‘Haunt’ Republicans

The women of The View were ready at the very beginning of their show Monday morning to absolutely tear the Trump administration apart for the “zero tolerance” immigration policy which has separated nearly 2000 children from their families.

First off, Whoopi Goldberg wanted to set the record straight on the administration’s insistence that the policy is a law.

“It certainly is a crime to enter the United States and cross the border illegally,” Sunny Hostin explained. “It’s a misdemeanor and it’s punishable up to six months in prison and/or a fine. However, there is no law that mandates that children must be separated from their families.”

“So when Donald Trump says the Democrats have a law, he is lying,” Joy Behar said.

“That is not true,” Hostin confirmed.

“Okay. He is lying. Say it,” Behar said to laughter from the audience.

“I have my legal hat on. I’m acting as the ABC News senior legal correspondent, and I want to give the law and the facts,” Hostin replied. “Those are the facts. Opinion is different.”

Hostin also clarified that the Obama administration also detained illegal immigrants, but it detained families together and did not separate them.

“Even when we detained or put Japanese-Americans into internment camps, they did not separate the families,” Behar added. “You can’t enjoy your life right now when you know that this is happening.”

“I keep thinking of 2,000 children, some of them are a year and a half, two years old,” she continued. “Who’s changing their diapers? … Who’s breast-feeding them? … The rules are prohibiting staff from making physical contact with the kids. They can’t even hold them, comfort them… It’s really abusive. And I hope that people remember this in November.”

“Congress can fix it easily,” Meghan McCain later said. I will say before we get too far ahead of ourselves of how evil all Republicans are… [many] have… come out against this and the optics of this.”

“Immigration reform is something that has been I think close to most Americans’ hearts,” she continued.

“There are so many great politicians on both sides that have tried to have comprehensive immigration reform, and this is the ultimate ending of our bad policies… that have been in place by not taking this more seriously and getting so tribal on both sides and not meeting in the middle,” she added. “I think these optics of the children… [they’re] saying that they are detention centers, but it looks like dog kennels to me. That is something that’s going to come back and haunt Republicans in the elections.”

“This is going to come back and bite us all in the ass,” Whoopi chimed in after some discussion. “Not just Republicans and Democrats. It’s going to bite all of us. So if we don’t demand this get fixed or at least dealt with, it’s on us. This is on us.”
