Tim Kaine Uses Biden Administration Fracking Record To Defend Harris’s ‘Shifting Positions’ After CNN Interview

Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) defended Vice President Kamala Harris after her recent interview with CNN was panned as “vague to the point of vacuous” by New York Times columnist Bret Stephens and argued “struggled to give straight answers to her shifting positions.”

Stephens blasted Harris following her conversation with CNN’s Dana Bash last week, where she was asked about her evolving stance on key policy issues, including fracking.

The heat on Harris has been turned up over her shifting stance on fracking—a critical issue as the Biden administration balances energy policy with climate goals. Back in 2019, Harris was all about banning fracking during the Democratic primary. But now says that she supports the practice.

Kaine, who appeared on Fox News Sunday, pushed back on the op-ed, cited by host Shannon Bream, who asked if Harris’s plan was to “ride this out on vibes.”

Kaine retorted: “I think vibes and accomplishments… You can’t get into everything in a short interview.”

The Democratic senator then highlighted the administration’s strategic use of fracking in natural gas production, arguing that “campaigning is one thing, governing is another.”

He said: “On fracking, let’s use that as an example. She took a position in the presidential debate in 2019. And now she has been part of an administration that has rocketed ahead with alternative energy investments because of the Inflation Reduction Act. Natural gas to backstop our allies are trying to wean themselves away from relying on Russia. The LNG [Liquified Natural Gas] in the world of the Biden/Harris administration but fracking is one of the reasons for it.“
