Trump ‘Not Happy’ With Putin After Phone Call: ‘I Don’t Think He’s Looking to Stop’

President Donald Trump publicly expressed deep frustration with Russian strongman Vladimir Putin after a phone call between the pair on Thursday that left him “very disappointed.”

“I’m very disappointed with the conversation I had today with President Putin, because I don’t think he’s there,” Trump told reporters on Thursday night. “And I’m very disappointed. I’m just saying I don’t think he’s looking to stop, and that’s too bad.”

He went on to blame former President Joe Biden for Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.

“This is Biden,” he said. “This isn’t me. This is Biden’s war. It wouldn’t have happened if I were president, it would have happened. So, you know, in one way, I had to get too involved because it’s Biden’s War. And I got stuck in the middle of it, just like I did with immigration and a lot of other things that they screwed up. But I was not happy with the conversation.”

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov sought to downplay the dissonance, according to The Telegraph, insisting the two leaders were “on the same page.” But Trump’s take flatly contradicted that assessment: “I didn’t make any progress with him at all.”

Just hours after the call, Russia reportedly launched a record-breaking barrage on Ukraine, firing over 550 drones and missiles in a coordinated overnight assault – the largest since the invasion began. Kyiv was the primary target, with local officials confirming at least 14 people injured and widespread damage, including to the Polish embassy.

“Absolutely horrible and sleepless night in Kyiv. One of the worst so far,” said Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister. “Hundreds of Russian drones and ballistic missiles rained down on the Ukrainian capital. Right after Putin spoke with President Trump.”

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, reacting to the strikes, said Russia would not “change its dumb, destructive behavior” unless pressure from allies and particularly the United States intensified.

Trump said he would be talking with Zelensky on Friday morning.
