Trump Says ‘Radical Right’ Won’t Be ‘Happy’ With His Plan to Allow Migrants to Stay in Country: ‘But They’ll Understand’

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he was working on legislation that would allow migrants working in the United States illegally to stay, remarking that the “radical right” would not be “happy, but they’ll understand.”

Speaking to supporters in Des Moines, Iowa, Trump announced:

We’re working on legislation right now where– Farmers, look, they know better. They work with them for years. You had cases where, not here, but just even over the years where people have worked for a farm, on a farm for 14, 15 years and they get thrown out pretty viciously and we can’t do it. We gotta work with the farmers, and people that have hotels and leisure properties too. We’re gonna work with them and we’re gonna work very strong and smart, and we’re gonna put you in charge. We’re gonna make you responsible and I think that that’s going to make a lot of people happy. Now, serious radical right people, who I also happen to like a lot, they may not be quite as happy but they’ll understand. Won’t they? Do you think so?

Trump then turned to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and said, “Madame Secretary, look at you with the white hat on. You think they’ll understand that? You’re the one that brought this whole situation up. Brooke Rollins brought it up and she said, ‘So we have a little problem. The farmers are losing a lot of people,’ and we figured it out and we have some stuff being written.”

“Let the farmers be responsible, and then if the farmers don’t do a good job, we’ll throw them the hell out of the country,” Trump concluded. “We’ll let the illegals stay and we’ll throw the farmer the hell out, okay? Get ready, farmer!”

The president ordered Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials to halt raids on farms, restaurants, and hotels last month after farmers complained that the raids were stripping them of workers.

“Our great Farmers and people in the Hotel and Leisure business have been stating that our very aggressive policy on immigration is taking very good, long time workers away from them, with those jobs being almost impossible to replace,” wrote Trump in a Truth Social post. “We must protect our Farmers.”

Trump then floated a plan that would make farmers “take responsibility” for rooting out violent criminals among their migrant workforce.
