Claire McCaskill Says Gen. Milley Was Right to Undermine Trump: He Was ‘Trying to Defend Democracy’

MSNBC contributor and former Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) on Tuesday defended Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, saying he was trying to “defend democracy” by subverting former President Donald Trump.

Opining in a segment on Morning Joe on the revelation that former Vice President Mike Pence conferred with one of his predecessors, Dan Quayle, for advice on whether he could follow the law while appeasing Trump’s demand that he try to overturn the 2020 presidential election, McCaskill said, “Trump started calling him out to the insurrection crowd, and they marched on the Capitol with flag poles to gouge out the eyes of police officers, shouting to hang Mike Pence.

“After it was revealed … that our top general was calling to defend democracy, as Joe said, to an undemocratic leader in the world to make sure that a war didn’t break out, to make sure they knew our strength was much stronger than the nonsense that Donald Trump was creating — what does Trump say? Fire him for treason,” McCaskill said. “I mean, this is really something that these people are still following this guy when he is so bad at respecting the Constitution and the rule of law.”

The Washington Post’s Bob Woodward and Robert Costa revealed on Tuesday that Milley called his Chinese counterpart in January to assure him that he would provide advance notice if the U.S. attacked China, and convened a meeting with top U.S. commanders to warn them against launching nuclear weapons at the president’s command.
