Fmr DHS Official Miles Taylor Calls Out Trump’s ‘Disinterest’ on Russian Interference in New Video: ‘He Denied That This Was a Threat’
Miles Taylor, the former Trump DHS official publicly going after the president and endorsing his opponent Joe Biden, is criticizing him in a new video over his “disinterest” on Russian interference in U.S. elections.
Taylor spoke out Monday in an op-ed and a video from Republican Voters Against Trump, saying, “Given what I’ve experienced in the administration, I have to support Joe Biden for president.”
Trump swiped at Taylor Tuesday morning and called him a “DISGRUNTLED EMPLOYEE” who was welcomed by the “Fake News circuit.”
In a new video from RVAT, Taylor talks about the difficulty of talking to the president about election security, particularly pertaining to Russia.
He says that after what happened in 2016, many officials felt that the U.S. needed to send a message to Russia to stop it, but “the president was very disinterested in it.”
“You couldn’t talk to the president about Russia without him thinking you were saying that his presidency was illegitimate,” Taylor says. “It’s possible to have both those ideas in your head at the same time. You could believe that the president legitimately won, but also believe that the Russians were out to attack America and divide our country.”
He continues:
“We thought that it was important for the president of the United States to be concerned… We had to deter the bad guys from meddling in the elections. A handful of times we tried to bring this up with the president. He was distracted, he was disinterested, but ultimately he denied it. He denied that this was a threat. He denied that this was a concern. And I specifically remember — we had a meeting with him at the White House where we talked about the Russian threat to the midterm elections. What the president wanted to talk about was how resoundingly he’d won the election in 2016. He wanted to talk about the counties that he’d won rather than the counties that we needed to protect against a foreign country intervening to divide Americans and potentially corrupt the vote.”
He said that there were officials in the administration scared to “talk about one of the top national security threats facing our country” because they were worried Trump would fire them or worse.
