MSNBC data guru Steve Kornacki is exiting the cable news network after inking a new deal with NBC News and NBC Sports as parent company Comcast preps a spin-off of its cable networks.
Kornacki, a staple of election coverage along with his big board of data, will assume the title of chief data analyst at NBC News and NBC Sports, according to the LA Times. Kornacki has long been a national political correspondent for NBC News, while pulling double duty on MSNBC as well.
Kornacki will transition to a new position as an NBC news contributor, while also working on Meet the Press, political coverage on NBC and NBC Sports.
Comcast, NBC’s parent company, announced in November that it intends to spin off its cable properties into separate entities, the Wall Street Journal reported.
Kornacki has been the subject of numerous viral moments over the years, and even branded a sex symbol among some thirsty viewers.
In 2022, he famously dropped in on NBC’s coverage of the National Dog Show — along with his big board — to break down the event’s previous Best in Show winners by breed.
In 2020, he appeared visibly stunned moments after longtime Hardball host Chris Matthews abruptly announced his retirement.
That same year, Khornaki announced that he gets his signature “Khornakis” at the GAP, leading to double the pants sales at the retailer.
The GAP later donated up to 500 pairs of khaki pants to the workforce readiness program at the Boys and Girls Club of America as part of the Giving Tuesday charitable effort.
Kornacki’s exit is part of several moves across NBC Universal, as MSNBC’s newly minted vice president of newsgathering, Scott Matthews, plans to hire more than 100 journalists as part of the network’s expanding newsgathering operation.
Also Tuesday morning, NBC Universal announced that NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton is departing NBC News to co-host MSNBC’s The Weekend: Primetime.
