Trump Says He Directed Elon Musk to Review Pentagon Spending For Cuts: ‘Going to Find a Lot’
President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has directed Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to begin looking at Pentagon spending next.
Musk’s DOGE is looking to slash trillions in government spending, and that effort has thus far included gutting USAID and offering buyouts to millions of federal employees. At a joint press conference with Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishib, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked Trump about Musk and the Pentagon, noting the Pentagon is the “largest discretionary funding” by the government. The Pentagon has also famously never passed an audit.
Trump predicted Musk will “find a lot” to cut in defense spending and he’ll also be looking at potential cuts in the Department of Education.
Check out the exchange below:
KAITLAN COLLINS: “Have you directed Elon Musk to review Pentagon spending, given it’s the biggest discretionary spending in government?”
DONALD TRUMP: “Yes, I have. The Pentagon, Education, just about everything. We’re going to go through everything. Just as it was so bad with what we just went through with this horrible situation we just went through. And I guess 97% of the people have been dismissed. It was very, very unfortunate. You’re not going to find anything like that, but you’re going to find a lot. And I’ve instructed him to go check out education, to check out the Pentagon, which is the military. And, you know, sadly, you find some things that are pretty bad. But I don’t think proportionately you’re going to see anything like we just saw in Europe.”
