Speaking at a rally on Sunday, congresswoman and former Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann told the audience that we are looking at both a “spiritual” and “political” hurricane. This, of course, as Hurricane Isaac makes its way towards several states along the Gulf of Mexico, previously threatening to cancel the Republican convention in Tampa:
We’re looking at a political hurricane in our own country. We are looking at a spiritual hurricane in our land. And it is time for each one of us to show up and suit up and stand up and realize that in this time and in this day we pour it out for Him. Add action to your faith.
Although it isn’t included in the video footage below, her statement was preceded with the sentence “At this moment in time we’re quite literally looking at a hurricane here in Florida,” creating a clear link between the actual weather threat and her metaphor. The Huffington Post also points out that Bachmann had previously linked natural disasters and politics in Florida, saying, “I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’” The congresswoman later said she had been joking.
A warning that the video below, via a local ABC affiliate, is loud as ffffffffffuuuuu. So do turn the volume down:
