Bernie Goldberg Says Limbaugh is Far Too Conservative to Win Presidency, Limbaugh Fires Back
Bernie Goldberg has been feuding with conservatives like Eric Bolling after writing a column critical of “true-blue conservatives.” He kept going on Bill O’Reilly‘s show Monday night, saying that someone like Ted Cruz or Rush Limbaugh would be far too conservative to be president. Limbaugh responded on his radio show Tuesday, saying it’s not his conservatism that would keep him from the presidency, it’s the media constantly “demonizing” him over the course of his career.
Goldberg told Bill O’Reilly that the GOP civil war has “serious political consequences,” and had a question for the “pure” conservatives pushing the moderates out of their party.
“If that strategy has been such a good one, why has there only been one conservative president in the past 80 years in this country? Pat Buchanan was as conservative as you get. He couldn’t even win his own party’s nomination, let alone a general election. Rush Limbaugh––nobody articulates conservatism as clearly and as passionately as Rush Limbaugh––he’d be the first to acknowledge that he couldn’t win a national election.”
He added that conservatives have to realize most people “don’t think the way they do” and if they want a strong conservative to win the presidency, they need someone with an Obama-like personality.
Well, Limbaugh was listening, and responded to Goldberg on his radio show Tuesday. He agreed that he wouldn’t win the presidency even if he wanted to run, but not for the reason Goldberg thought.
“The reason I couldn’t win is that I’ve been demonized. I’ve had––my reputation has been demonized and assaulted for 25 years… It’s not conservatism that can’t win, it’s that conservatism has been so ogre-ized and so demonized by an alliance of the Democrat party and the media.”
Limbaugh said people who know conservatives like him personally understand it’s the media to blame, not conservative politics, and touted that he does more “genuine” news than mainstream news organizations because at least he’s honest about his bias.
