Dan Rather‘s career at CBS ended rather unceremoniously following an erroneous 60 Minutes report he broke about George W. Bush‘s service in the Texas Air National Guard, so naturally he would have a unique perspective on 60 Minutes coming under fire for a botched report on Benghazi. Rather finally weighed in on The Joe Madison Show, saying it’s unfair to blame Lara Logan for the entire mess.
Rather made it clear at the outset this was not in any way analogous to the report that got him criticism, saying the Bush story got CBS in trouble because it was true, but in this instance CBS News has admitted the Benghazi report was completely false. Rather said he still has friends at CBS and didn’t want to “contribute to increasing the difficulties of questions in any way.”
That being said, he thought too much blame was being assigned to Logan, just because she’s the face of the report.
“There is a tendency when these kind of things happen to blame the correspondent whose voice and face was on the story, but whatever happened and however it happened, people in the corporate hierarchy of CBS News and leaders of the news division share at least as much of whatever blame there is to be as the correspondent, but they try to make it appear their fingerprints aren’t on it.”
