Democratic Senator Tweets Photo of Trump’s Budget in Trash Can, Says It’s Where It ‘Belongs’
Today, the Trump administration divulged its 2018 federal budget proposal, revealing massive cuts to programs for poor Americans, specifically Medicaid, food stamps and Social Security disability benefits.
In response to the release of the plan, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) was blunt in his assessment:
This is where the #TrumpBudget belongs. pic.twitter.com/5YtP39OPVx

The liberal Oregon lawmaker didn’t stop there, unleashing a fury of tweets assailing the budget:
#TrumpBudget is brainless. It is heartless. And it relies on Madoff-style accounting tricks.
— Ron Wyden (@RonWyden) May 23, 2017
#TrumpBudget is a giveaway to special interests at the expense of kids, working families & seniors.

#TrumpBudget cuts care for kids under bipartisan program (CHIP) that provides health insurance for 8 million+ kids. KIDS. Unbelievably cruel
— Ron Wyden (@RonWyden) May 23, 2017
#TrumpBudget slashes #Medicaid by over $600 billion, putting kids’ care & seniors’ nursing home benefit on the chopping block.
— Ron Wyden (@RonWyden) May 23, 2017
He also took aim at President Trump for not upholding his campaign promises:
It cuts $33 BILLION from #Medicare. Which Trump promised not to touch. pic.twitter.com/Z4UJonDYQN

As the budget shows, Medicaid would be slashed by $800 billion over the next ten years. On top of that, $192 billion would be cut from nutritional assistance while $272 billion overall would be trimmed from welfare programs. And even though Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney noted the White House wasn’t proposing cuts to the Social Security retirement program, $72 billion will be sliced from disability benefits.
